Getting to the point where the car may have to go because of gammy knee, what cars are out there in up to about £35k and would require to be tip/auto that are worth considering and are not Porsches as I have serious doubts about the 996 and even though you can get a warranty, I feel this is a cop out in admitting the cars are seriously flawed. They must also be able to provide the same fun that I have had in all of my other Porsches and not just be GT cruisers.

So getting your thinking caps and and let the discussions begin :D

Already had one, albeit was a C2.

Hi,

With the budget of £35K pretty restricted IMHO. If no budget the Ferrari route is worth a look, but from colleagues who have had then pretty much a hit and miss with reliability.

From a fun perspective and heritage how about a Ford Mustang a nice older model with the raw V8 sound. When I go to the States I always hire one, never get bored with them.

Found the clutch on the 996 pretty smooth so your knee must be pretty painful.

Cheers Alan.

This is why I bought my tip, knackered knees. :(
. You should be able to get a tip M3, probably 2004/2005 with 20K miles for that sort of money easily.

Or as an odd option an imported 350Z with tip. This would only be about £18K and very entertaining! :D

For that kind of money I would have to say a well spec'd M3. A bit "fleet" but still a great car.

However just having another think.

The Z4 M is coming in new at around £40k

As long as you're talking 2nd hand, what about a Viper, or a Vette or even a XKR?

An XKR, now that it is an interesting proposition. I had a look at one of those about four years agoand have to admit that I really did like it, but it was not what I was looking for at that time.

However, maybe it is time to revisit. But then again is this another big soft GT cruiserlike the Aston Martin?

Although the M3 is a really good car, I cannot get past the rep mobile image.

I've been thinking about this for sometime now. A lot of the modern powerful "sports cars" are actually GT cruisers. eg AM, Jag, Merc, BM-M5/6 etc

To replace a 911, you need a compact nimble powerful Sports car. Lotus and the like are go-karts with fibreglass body shells, big wide Ferraris Lambo are great occasional "look at me" cars that can't really be enjoyed without worrying about the next service. 911 sits between the two.

Nissan, Honda, Subaru etc etc are good cars but, they're not exactly asthetically pleasing, are they.

I know Porsche is not winning condidence with a few of us at the moment, but compared to other manufacturers, they're not doing badly.

So after hours of thinking about this, the answer is still a 911, if you still want the driving experience it gives.

i found the clutch on my 996 to be very stiff and made my knee ache but once the clutch was replaced it was light as a feather, but i dont know how bad your knee is

Mick,

I have been coming to the same conclusion, but I have a major block on the 996 because of reliability. It is not all the internet stories, I know personally a lot of people who have bought 996s for them all to have major problems, one guy had 3 clutches in just over 12 months and eventually demanded that the OPC take it back, which they did!

Vince,

My knee is in a sorry state :(
Had two operations, last one was a major reconstruction. It is now getting to the point that I may have to revert to the graphite shaffted irons again :( :?

Will,

I got my tip for the same reason (torn cruciate) and have been very happy with it. I didn't want to risk an early 996, but my 2001 is going really well (touch wood). :D

But like you say it is going to be a bit of a risk! :(

Will, I'm sure with each generation of water cooled 911, reliability will improve and issues will be resoleved. May be when the time comes, 997 would be in the price range? :)
If you think 996 is unreliable, then all the other comparable competitors are definately out of the question! :D
Why not just stick to the bullet proof 993?

Konw how you feel with knackared knee, both of mine are ticking time bomb! That's one of the many reasons why I stick to a LHD 993, there's no way my Rt knee can cope with the offset pedals on a RHD for more than a few mins.

I was tempted to spend the extra and go for a 2001 as well, but I just couldn't get used to those pathetic little boot and engine lid buttons
