How about a Boxster?

Please forgive me for this sin, but rather than a 911, I'm looking at buying an early LHD Boxster largely down to "cheaper" servicing costs. From a piece of mind angle I’m thinking of buying from a dealer but not an OPC mainly to get my grubby mits on a warranty.

I guess I’m looking for good dealer in the South East, does anyone know of any? Also, does anyone know of any Boxster specific foibles that I should be aware of? And yes I will get a PPI that does seem to be a common line in this area of the forum.

Other than that any Boxster specific information would be gratefully received

Thanks

Mark

Mark,

I bought an imported rhd boxster when they first came out in 98, I used it like a fleet car and clocked up 60,000 miles in 2 years. I had the 2.5 with the sports pack and full leather etc, the car wore well except for the common problem with the engine, after 50,000 miles the engine had to be replaced this was all covered in the 2 year warranty from Porsche who told me an engine replacement was £16,000 at the time, I think it is something to do with the engine casing, one of the reasons I got rid of my one was the new engine developed a similar leak, I think the later 2.7 is ok and the 3.2. Also developed a cracked rear window on the hood, I was never told you had to fold this with your arm and think I lowered the roof at close to 0 degress snapped it in 2. Replacement hood was a couple of grand but found a hood repairer who fixed it for a couple of hundread. Lovely car to drive and good fun when you put the roof down,

Thanks for the information Alex, at least there is one "real" Porsche owner who is willing to take pity on us lesser mortals

Just one follow up question, do you know how common the problem with the 2.5 engine is?

Thanks

Mark

It wouldn't be too common, and any problems would have been sorted under warranty.

If I knew anything about Boxsters I would speak up but like Mannuel from Barcelona "I know nothing".

At the time their was another 2 cars that the dealer's had to rectify by engine replacement. I put it down to the boxster being a new car and having teething problems by reading this forum everyone advices against the early 996 which were also new at the same time, If I was going to purchase a boxster I would try and beg borrow or steal to get a 2.7 just for the fact they had probably sorted the car/engine when this one was launched

Thanks for the info

Does anyone know anything about Oakhills, they have a nice looking 2.5 that fits the budget, just wondering what their reputation is like?
