Headlight level warning on dash - sensors on suspension are ok

Hi all, first post for me as potentially a new-to-me 997.2 owner.

The car has been into a local specialist for a PPI and they've checked and can't see anything wrong... but... the headlight level warning comes on the dash suggesting there is an issue.
The specialist has said the sensors don't need changing as they are working fine. The current owner has said he'd change them as a precaution but the specialist have said they don't need changing.

Does anyone have any experience or any ideas on what else could be causing it?

Cheers

If the specialist is sure it's not the level sensors, the motors inside the headlight (99763122701), or perhaps the control unit. Has the car been attached to PIWIS? Are they Dynamic Cornering Lights, or are they standard Bi-Xenon?

The OE match level sensors on D911 are £63.05 plus VAT each; two of those would be worth changing to begin identifying the fault (99763112100), although I object to buying anything from D911, OE match on eBay are less than half.

Hi thanks for the reply. I think it has been on PIWIS, they are standard bi-xenon headlights.

Would the control unit show up on PIWIS?

The specialist has said the level sensors are fine and they have triple checked them but haven’t offered up any other possibilities.

Has the reset been carried out?

You can force the headlights to run an auto-level cycle. With the key off, turn the headlight switch all the way on, then cycle the key to the auxiliary position (the one before the car starts that lights up all the warning lights). The headlights will drop down and then lift up and auto-level. My 997.1 lights only do this when I run the test, not each time I turn them on. From Rennlist.

If you can get access to a car with the front control unit for Xenon (blue/white plugs) then I would try that (99761851201).

I'm not sure if the reset has been done or not, I'll probably learn more today.

When you say "If you can get access to a car with the front control unit for Xenon (blue/white plugs) then I would try that (99761851201)." what do you mean sorry? Do you mean source one from a breaker?

If it's in at an independent for the PPI they will most likely have another car in with that front control unit which they can 'borrow' for five minutes. Sourcing from a breakers is also an option, although that's a pain as they're at least a couple of hundred pounds, and you have no guarantee they're not faulty. For completeness there are three main elements: sensors, control unit, motors in the light housing. Excluding really awkward things such as wiring, connectors, and instrument cluster.

Also, I did not answer your other question. With PIWIS it will not specify what is faulty, but does allow for extensive testing to eliminate some things. Resetting all faults on the car is also handy sometimes as this will clear some issues. Testing known good components is the most direct way, and simply a process of elimination.

The specialist has come back today and said the drivers side motor is playing up but they are levelling so it’s something I need to keep an eye on. I think I’ll look at purchasing a 99763122701

Hi, do you know if I attempt to replace the levelling motor myself if the headlights need to be realigned or if any additional work needed by a specialist is needed?

No harm in trying. What's the worst that can happen 🤷‍♂️

The headlights are really tight and fiddly. As an aside, if the lenses are scratched or chipped enough to justify changing you could get it done at the same time. It's around £700 for the pair, including the cost of the lenses. Get them PPF'd at the same time. Rennlens and Keep Your Car Safe are two people that do it; I've not used either but will be using one or the other soon.
