Head unit

Hi everyone

I'm looking to change the head unit in my 993. Ive been looking around for a few weeks now and the choice is endless.

I don't want anything to flashy as it won't go with the car. I have a sony in it at present that looks ok. But I want MP3 and WMA if possible and 2 preouts. Nothing to pricey though, I looked at Becker but they are a bit dear.

Has anyone got any ideas, pictures etc as I'm getting a bit feed up with looking. The car has a red interior so perhaps red illumination would be good.

Cheers

Alpine.

You can vary the illumination colour infinitely to give a perfect colour match with the illumination of the other instruments. Great sound and features too (MP3, WMA, etc including iPod connection via KCA-420i). I was very happy when I had it installed in my 993.

I have looked at the alpine 9847r which has either red or green back lighting and a choice of four colours for the main buttons. RED, GREEN, AMBER, Or BLUE.

You must have one of the new models 9853 9855 perhaps?

Regards

I just had a cheapo Alpine 9846RM put in my 993 yesterday and it looks really good. The amber illumination matches my dials quite nicely.

A very good unit for £100 or so.

I can't remember the exact model (my car has since been sold), but it was one down from the top of the range about 1 year ago. I bought it off eBay brand new for about £200. The higher range models allow you to vary the customise the colour to anything within the RGB spectrum.

BTW, installation of most headunits is very simple. If you are able to identify colour coded cables, plug them into each other, and operate a screwdriver, you should be able to install a headunit within 10 minutes max. I wouldn't bother paying an ICE expert the £50 or whatever they charge to do it...

The problem with the lower end Alpines is the Pre outs. The head unit I have at present is connected upto the factory HiFi option including the amp etc so I need a unit with at least 2 preouts, so that it will be a simple swap over job!!

Hi Ray,

I have just bought a new head unit today it is a bit flash though jvc kd-avx1 motorised dvd with cd/mp3 and wma but as another post suggested head units nowadays can go in and come out of the car in 10 mins i plan to enjoy the ice system in the car its modern and has all the mod cons, i can watch movies, tv,put my whole album collection on one dvd disc and listen to it without changing a disc ect ect, i bought the system for £270 on ebay, if i ever come to sell my 993 i will simply take it out and either flog it or put it in the next car, and before sale i will buy a blaupunkt mp3 player for under £100 and put it in the car.

incidently the blaupunkt unit i looked at today was a pretty simple cd/mp3/wma player black facia with red illumination lights which would go well with your dash/interior colour run a search on ebay for blaupunkt mp3 player its around £90-£100

good luck

p.s can anyone tell me the diameter shape and depth of standard front door speakers in a 993 c2 cab 1994 and has anyone ever replaced the standard speakers if so for what ? i want to replace mine as the sound from them is imho rubbish in comparison to whats available nowadays...any help please i am sure in 1994 these speakers were top notch but in 2006 the music clarity within the car does not match the stunning good looks from the outside

Hi Walt,

As I mentioned above, I am no expert, so I have been trawling the net & forums for advice. So I am just relating what info I have, someone may well completely contradict me.

The door speakers are 5.25" components, I believe it is possible to get 6.5" in there so I have bought a cheap pair to try. I will let you know if they fit.! They were rubbish when new (Nokia) so anything would probably be better than std fitment.

Thanks for all the imput guys. I will look at all your suggestions.

Walt, I don't suppose you know the model of the Blaupunkt unit you described?

Cheers

Hi Ray,

Sorry m8 i didnt clock the model number but pop into your local halfords as they have the blaupunkt with red ilumination buttons in stock, however do not buy from there, they were advertising the system i bought for a wopping £699 i bought it new on ebay for £270 saving £429.

Graham, i would be very interested on what front speakers you go for and how they sound etc as thats my next job, and if anyone else has imput on front speaker upgrades please let me know ta, i am also going to get a subwoofer and amp built into the car nothing boyracerish just want to improve the interior sound,so again any advice on where to install the sub and box and what to go for would be a great help.
