Hartech or new short block from Porsche

Hello all, I hope this post might help me and other people as well. I need to rebuild my engine 996 c4 2002 manual, I looked at Hartech for the rebuild process but I also got a quote from Porsche that is slightly less than what Hartech quote in their website. My questions around are:

- Will be worth it to change the short block from Porsche (3 years warranty)
- Will this engine have the newer IMS or fix future bore score?

I am not sure if anyone else did the replacement from Porsche , so here I am asking this.

The price will be similar, unless I’ll go to increase from 3.6 to 3.9 where Hartech will be more expensive.

Hi Jag, may i ask why the need for the rebuild and the mileage...?

Si.

Does the short block include stripping your old engine, rebuilding and installing by Porsche?

Mileage are 83500, the reason is after dropping the engine to change the leak on the radiator oil cooler (one bolt was impossible to carry the work. The mechanic discovered that the new IMs cover was leaking and after take it out, the oil come with metal pieces, so I accepted that it needs a rebuild , also it was discovered some bore with after looking with the camera.

The short block is not installed by Porsche, but the work with Hartech is the same, I am going to send the block only as the issue happened outside UK. The garage know a person in Porsche and the price of the block was quite surprisingly good, it will be bring the old one and get a new one with oil pump and new IMs, it is not s strip down of the engine , is a full new block, I guess is the latest m96, But I asked and they didn’t fix in the future it might be bore score as it is still “alusil”( I think that’s the correct word). I think at this point just bring to Hartech and do a 3.9 will be wiser

As far as I'm aware, a new short block from Porsche utilises the newer IMS shaft and bearing as found in the later 997's which don't fail

But it will not prevent a bore score, if that happens in the future

You’d probably get another 80k++ miles out of it first though… how long are you keeping the car?!

If you want a quicker turn around I would be going down the Porsche route. Only advantage to the Hartech build is warranty if doing the job fully in house. Borescore on a 996 is unlikely going to happen in the cars lifespan.

Warranty is 3 years on the block, I can’t remembered if it was unlimited mileage, but they mentioned 3 years, even the block will no be installed by Porsche.
