Guys, what are the most popular routes for improving the sound a little ? I would be lookiing for a cost effective and easily reversible method rather than a fill blown Europipe system.

Decat pipes maybe ?
Sportscat ?
Or just back boxes ?


Any sound clips ?
 
The question is cost really, this was my mistake, I tried to save cost and ended up spending more and having to make bespoke changes.

For 997/ cup sound you really need a x-cross cat, I wouldn't de-cat.

For a nice growl try the Manthey back boxes direct from M&M, ask Dan as he had them on his MKI and they sounded very nice, not expensive either.

Exhausts are an absolute nightmare to get exactly what you want as no manufacturer has accurate results/ comparisons and youtube is full of distorted iphone clips.

I've discovered that M+M measure their exhausts using the "slow" setting on the sound meter. UK circuits use the" fast" setting. What this means in practise is their noise figures are 10dB less than what they measure on a UK trackday noise check. For example, my M+M Cup system is 108dB not the 98dB that M+M quote.

..To be fair I thought it was more like 120db....when you left the Shell at
the Chunnel last week, I could still hear you for more than a minute as you
headed back up the M20...lol :grin:
 
I may have been "making progress" up the M20 :cop:

Noise is a very subjective thing: I got on at Brands (a 101dB day) last week with my ugly cans on, never tripped the 92dB driveby & still didn't when I removed them for the last 12 laps of the day.

Go figure :dont know:

I thought that you might have guessed that i'd sent a driver up to drug
the noise man...fact was when you kept whizzing past ...he was actually asleep...lol :floor:
 
Thx stuart, i dont mind it loud. I like more of a gurgling throaty sound rather than just a louder version of stock. Its difficult trying to find any examples though.
 
Yes saw that thread, thanks. Ddnt want to spend anything like 1k though being honest. Is there any clips online of the manthey boxes and their sound ?
 
I had M+M on my GT3, great sound :thumb:
 
I've got the Cargraphic R back boxes on my MK1 and they sound great without any droning.

Sport cats and headers next I think.
 
The company that I run makes all kinds on pipes and ducts for the aerospace industry and Formula 1. This includes welding all types of materials from stainless steels to titanium and high performance nickel alloys. So, I took off my back boxes and had one of the welders cut and weld in a 1.25" bypass pipe. You have to run it very close to the top of the silencer and if you do this it fits very nicely.

The sound is perfect. Hardly noticeable in the cabin but if you wind the windows down and open the taps you have a lovely low rumble. Also lots of pops and cracks on the overrun.

If I want to go back to standard Ill have one of the welder cut the bypass pipe in the centre and weld in a round disc.

..Now, that's what I call a handy solution...and even better when the
welder is on the payroll...sometimes it does just work out !. :grin:
