Good Seat Renovation Experience

My otherwise pristine 993 was initially let down by some wear marks on the bolsters of the seats. The interior is a light grey so the dark wear marks were quite visible. I've had the seat faces recoloured by a firm in the West Midlands and the results are superb. The work was done with the seats still in the car and took a day and a half.

Only time will tell how durable the finish is. The guy who did it advised it would never be as durable as the initial colour on the leather but should last a few years.

Total cost was about £160 which included giving the door panels a good scrub as well.

Any before and after pics? I was thinking of using liquid leather but I'm just a bit physically lazy. Do they use similar sort of process? ie clean, dye then condition?

I suspect they used the "re-connolising" process. This is effectively an in-situ re-coating of the seat faces with a coloured treatment similar to the surface finish produced by the original tannery. The benefits are that it is quick, and , as you say, allows for the seats to be restored with minimal time costs (normally only the removal of the steering wheel). I have seen the process in progress at a copuple of specialists, it needs special spray equipment, ventilation, and breathing equipment - the solvent base smell very potent! For the price it makes a world of difference, and is thoroughly worth doing.

Butzi, I've got some before pics from when the car was PPI'd, I'll take some after picks and have a go at posting them. I too was thinking of using liquid leather, however, I'd read about some people getting variable results. Besides, it's very cold outside and I'm lazy.

David Haughie, your description of the process sounds spot on. You're right about the solvent based smell. It's only just gone away.

Results are definitely top notch. Like I said only time will tell how durable it is.

I've had really good results using the Gliptone liquid leather products. It's a fiddle to use and pretty messy, but if you're careful and do lots of thin coats (having cleaned the leather really well), then it's very effective and not at all expensive. I've used it on the linen leather interior in both my old 3.2 and now my 964. It seems to stand up fairly well to wear and tear, but I would expect the 're-connolising' to be a bit more durable. No idea how either product works on other colours of leather, but I would suggest that if it's for a 'general spruce up' then try the Gliptone stuff first and if you're not happy then go for re-connolising. However, it does struggle on badly scuffed/discoloured or split leather. On a 993 I can't imagine that the leather could be bad enough to warrant a full re-connolising yet.........

I have just had my seats re-connolised at
Leathercare Renovations in Warrington.

It is run by two guys who used to work for Connoly's Leather and they have the franchise to actually call what they are doing re-connolising.

This is the second set of seats that they have done for me for Porsches that I have owned and the results both times have been fantastic.
