Getting the price right on a 84 3.2

I have just had a PPI on a 1984 3.2, reports back are generally good, no rust, no rot, engine on 109K and expected rebuild in around 1-2 years.

The exhaust is about to be replaced as the flanges had rotted so that will be covered by the seller, suspension is the original from 84 and so should be changed and new tyres are needed to get proper Porsche N rated all round.

Expected costs are £1500 to get car straight and 3K quoted for the rebuild in the future.

Seller had it up for 14K before the PPI, I was thinking if they have the exhaust replaced at £1500 then I felt that 12-13K would be a fair price for this car for current market value.

I am intending to use as a daily drive and have driven, the clutch is fine for a cable and the 915 is rebuilt and works fine, confirmed by PPI.

What do you guys think?

If the A pillars, B pillars, inner sills (that you can't see), inner wings, kidney bowls, battery recess, impact bumpers, scuttles, door bases, edges of rear wings are all genuinely rot free then buy it.


Sadly I took mine to classic porsche bodywork specialist AFTER buying, and was shown (and had my hands guided to) rot that my local non porsche indie (and me!) Had missed. So much is from the inside out on these. Stripdown, work and rebuild was going to be £16k.

If the right place has inspected it and found 'no rot', go for it, but be £100% sure they have done it 100 times before. Watching a guy walk up, make his arm into a funny shape, reach where the sun does not shine, and say 'that's shot' is gutting when it's £500 of work, when he does the other side and says 'that's shot too', you barely have time to wince before he says ' if they are shot then I bet this will be' before folding himself double and sending an entire hand somewhere or other and producing chunks of bodywork...

The guys I used for the PPI are a Indie specialist, Unit 11 in Warrington. All they do is Porsche so they know their business, this is why I asked the seller for a full inspection having previously owned a 996 that engine went south on me and I had to sell at a £5K loss.

The issues were suspension was original and needs replacing, tyres not N rated and need replacing. 915 rebuilt 3 years ago and all good.

I was offered the car through a friend of my father in law, it is not officially for sale so this is why I figured it could be a good one.

I feel compelled to point out that N-rating was something introduced after 1984, so your car and indeed ANY 911 does not NEED N-rated tyres.

When I had a widebodied 3.2, N-rated tyres in that size were seriously NOT the ones to have. I think it had Goodyears as the sizes are a bit odd.

Which N-rated tyre sizes actually fit your 3.2? Ones designed in the Stone Age?
