Gear change

Hey all,

Whats the gear change like for you? My 964 seems to have trouble changing into 1st, and from 1st to 2nd. Sometimes it changes smoothly, other times it doesnt want to go at all and i have to give it a bit more force.

Has anyone experienced this or does it suggest a worn gearbox??

Hmm, maybe marginally. Although when it is parked in 1st or reverse and i then try to put it into neutral, it is almost impossible to do without putting a bit of force into it. Quite worrying as i think it could be doing some damage.

Hi Super,

This is bad news, same happened to me in my 993, and cost me £4000 to repair, that was for a second hand box fitted.

Sounds like there are teth missing or broken in the box.

Good way to tell, is to empty the gearbox oil, if it is black (bad sign) and full of iron fillings stuck to the gearbox sump plug, this would suggest bad damage inside the gearbox.

If this is the case take it to a specialist.

Just paid out nearly a grand to get my 944 through its latest MOT! Car is booked into a specialist to get a service so i'll ask him to change the box oil at the same time. If it does turn out to be as bad as suggested, is there any chance of damage to any other parts?

Daz, could they not just change the damaged cogs? eg if it's just the synchromesh that's worn then surely they could just change that or even upgrade to a steel one?

They striped the box, and the damage in mine was beyone economical repair, it was easier to get a second hand box.

I had lost teeth of 3rd and 4th Syncromesh, and some other bits in there.

I learnt the hard way, that one of the most important things to check on a second hand car is the colour of the gearbox oil, if it is dark black this means that it has probably not been changed for years, and as such is carrying all the nasties in and around all the cogs etc, wear wear wear wearing away.

Justin don't jump off the bridge yet, it might just be a clutch problem, eg slave/master cylinder, worn plate etc not releasing the gears properly, so let the clever people have a look before you slash your wrist!

Knowing my luck, it'll be the worst. If not then i'll feel alot happier! If it does turn out to be a knackered gearbox, will driving result in more damage to other parts in the car? im in a catch 22 situation now, do I sell the 944 and use the cash for repairs, or use the 944 while the 911 is off the road and hope for the best? decisions dicisions . .

I'm going to the doctor next week with a cough, shall assume its lung cancer until then? :wink:

Just kidding Daz, this kind of approach can help to soften the blow sometimes. Unless you sit on it for a long time, in which case it starts to mess with your head.

it might just need an oil change - that can work wonders sometimes or maybe even the linkage needs adjusting.
