Hi everyone

Can anybody confirm if a Gatso can get you if you are driving towards it? I was flashed twice the other day going a little faster than I should.

If on the other hand the camera flashes was for a car going in the other direction could I be done because I would be on their picture if you see what I mean.

Cheers

Hi

The answer is that Gatso's don't work in the opposite direction. I have been flashed many times going in the 'wrong' direction on the A556 in Cheshire. The road has 2 lines in either direction, but no central reservation. Consequently, when using lane 2 the Gatos on the opposite side nearly always triggers !!! The question is, what happens to the motorist who IS within the speed limit, but happens to be on the markings when the camera fires ?

I think the cameras fire twice - and the distance you have moved between each photo proves your speed. The motorist on the other side of the road would only be in one photo.

I hear what you are saying guys, but I would have been in both pictures so I thought they may be able to have me because they would have been able to calculate my speed as well as the car that HAD set the camera off going in the opposite direction.

Ray, I think that you'll be fine.

Out of interest, when did this happen? If it was more than 2 weeks ago and you haven't received the Notice yet, then its doesn't count anyway!

Only last night, so I will have to wait and see.

Without looking like some law-breaking, speed nutter, I have set cameras off whilst travelling in the opposite direction a number of times!. One reason for this is that they are calibrated to calculate your speed when moving away from them. I cannot imagine what the calculated speed must look like when travelling towards one?

The only camera that works facing you are the blue digital ones such as the one on the A14. Gatsos work when you travel away from them and the police use the markings on the road to show the distance travelled to calculate your speed. This obviously doesn't work in reverse !!!

Thanks for all the comments Guy's

Sounds as though I will be OK! I will post in two weeks time to confirm!

Can't get you Ray. Gatso's only work using speed between two points. if you are nearer the camera (because you are going the opposite way) it can't compute. They may send you a commendation for driving very slowly!!

I had the same and a friend who works in traffic police says can't happen. They obviously don't publicise this becaue it can work as a deterrant both ways.
