Hi guys,

It's my first post on your great forum so please be gentle with me!

After no impending news and even more rumours about the delay of my allocated Audi TT V6 DSG, I've decided to kick it into touch.

I'm taking a look at a '95 M reg Porsche 993 Carrera 2 tommorow with 49500 miles on the clock and all the extras. It seems from the picture I have to be extremely well looked after and immaculate. Anything I should look out for?

Oh, it's £28,950 and has a "turbo" spoiler and 18" turbo wheels and clear front bumber indicator lenses. He has the original vario spoiler - whats the cost to get this back on the car if I decide the "turbo" spoiler is naff?

Whats the difference between a non-carrera, carrera 2 and carrera 4? I guess that the later 2 are 2 and 4 wheel drive respectively.

Sorry for all the questions, but I'm sure you guys understand.

Thank you and kind regards

Dean Southcombe

Hi Dean

Welcome to 911UK. A 993 will either be a Carrera 2 (2WD) or a Carrera 4 (4WD), but of course the generic term is Carrera.

Everyone here will say the same thing, don't rush in to buying the first car you see, there are plenty out there, and condtion and history are the things to look for rather than mileage alone.

Look for accident damage, check the history carefully. Colour and trim are important for resale value.

Get the car checked over (Pre purchase inspection PPI) by an independent specialist, there are plenty around, especially in the London area.

Good luck

Beat to it by Nick!

Anyway, welcome to the board Dean. Nick is, of course, spot on. There is nothing in particular to look for with a 993, over and above any other generation of 911s. I would recommend though that you do a search on this site for "buying guide" and have a look at the sorts of things 911 buyers need to look for (regardless of which generation). The best thing you can do, though, is to test drive a lot and really get a feel for 993s so that when you find a good one you will know.

If the previous owner didn't change the engine lid but just swapped the spoiler over then he may have drilled new holes in the engine lid. The owner should be able to tell you what he did to fit the new spoiler and so you should be able to tell if it will be a straight swap or not.

Good luck with the hunt.

James

.......cheers Nick, thank's for the advice. I'll report back tommorow evening with my findings.

Thanks again,

Dean.

.......thanks James. Apparently he changed the lid as well so this sounds promising? I spoke with the guy last night for about 30mins and he seemed extremely knowledgeable and was quite an enthusiast to the point of sounding like a 911 fanatic which is always a good sign.

I'll see what happens.

Is the price he's asking about right if it is indeed immaculate and well maintained?

What service intervals would I excpect it to have kept and when would the next one be if it's done 49,500 miles to date? At what mileage is the "major" service? What's the servicing costs of these beauties? Any intermittent ones for oil and filter, etc.?

Sorry for all the questions!!!!!!!

Cheers

Dean

Price sounds about right. Prices for early, high mileage 993s start at about £20k now for a LHD version. Of course RDH is more expensive. At 50k miles the car you are looking at is fairly average mileage for the age but as always with 911s you pay for condition. If it has been lovingly looked after I would say it is good value.

I don't know the 993 service intervals but there are plenty of owners on this board. I am sure one of them will pipe up soon. 993 service costs are pretty good by 911 standards (hydraulic tappets etc reducing labour costs) but again I am not exactly sure what the costs are.

Cheers, James

Dean,

Its all in the service book, it will outline all of the service interval information and recommended work. The same book should be where all the service history stamps are, but also on the following pages brake fluid change stamped intervals, Airbag check stamped intervals and also the Porsche anti corossion waranty inspection intervals must be adhered to for the anti corrosion waranty to be valid.

If you're referring to the one in autotrader, (midnight blue?, 49.5k, spoiler and 18" wheels), I also had a long chat to the owner. Personally, I was put off by the service record - it had been serviced regularly but 'by a guy down the road'. When you get into these cars, they must have a full history by a well known specialist or OPC. It was originally advertised at £31k and has dropped a couple of grand. He won't thank me for telling you but he said he'd accept £25k!! Sounds cheap but too good to be true??? I found an immaculate 993, FPSH by AFN Reading, so am glad I stuck to my gut feel about the other car. It's very easy to get excited about these cars but do take the advice of others on this forum, take your time, there are plenty out there.

.......thanks guys for all your responses!!!

I was just watching a video of a 993 carrera twin turbo 600bhp monster on
www.germancarfans.com
, what a machine! How will the body work differ from the m reg 993 carrera 2 with turbo spoiler and front valance that I will be viewing tomorrow, i.e. is the turbo a wider body shell, rear bumber etc. as I only have a pic from the front 3/4?

Thanks in advance

Dean
