£70 via Porsche. £15 via Frazerparts.

I'm sure I recall someone here...Kim? Posting that you are best only replacing only one rather than the pair as otherwise the engine cover can pop up a bit too viciously.

Can anyone advise if this is the case? Or do i buy a pair?

Are these a doddle to fit?

Porsche parts all the way for me.

They have different grades for spoiler, no spoiler etc. after market ones just seem to be one over the top grade.

Fitting one strong one just increases the chances of straining and possibly bending the engine cover.

If you can be sure they are identical pressure etc then get a pair, not one.

Fitted two of the £15 frazer parts. The lid does indeed 'fly up' when you pull the release. Can't see this is a bad thing tho

Hello,
I fitted the standard struts supplied by design911 and they are fine. The job itself is a little fiddly, but not difficult if you take out the air filter box and the heater motor. Trust me, it takes 10 mins to take them both out, and makes it a MUCH easier a job. Check out Jackals Website for a step by step "how to do"
Tie a bit of dental floss on to the clips when you are trying to put them back on. This will help you keep a hold of them as they have a habit of pinging off down the back of the engine somewhere.
My struts were a bit urgent when they were first fitted, but they settle down after a couple of weeks and the lid lifts up at a nice speed on its own.
Good luck, it's a very satisfying little DIY.

OEM from Type 911 13 quid plus VAT

ATB :)

On the clips, rather than the dental floss method I just pop a piece of kitchen roll beneath the job area. If the clip falls, it's far easier to see and recover.

:thumb: Absolutely. No brainer not to

I bought a pair of original equipment Stabilus Struts from FrazerPart. As said there are two types, heavy duty for lids with a fixed spoiler and standard for lids with a retractable spoiler.

No problems with the lid rising to quickly with mine so I can only assume that the flying lid issue would be a result of ordering aftermarket struts or incorrectly specifying heavy duty oe struts for use with a standard retractable spoiler lid.

Hi Steve,

You've got a (fairly) good memory.

My struts were not OEM but they were for the front. I had a go at fitting them myself but after three hours, drove it to the garage with bleeding knuckles and high blood pressure. (Never try and replace the bonnet ones yourself if you have the will to live.)

They fitted the fronts for me and it was a bit like Arkwright's Till - stand well back when you open it. I don't know if the rears would be the same.

You're maybe too young to remember Arkwright.

Ask Madalaa.

Or Billy Ocean Curry.

I've checked Jackals site but I can't see an online video of how to do this. Anyone got a link? I'm going to try it myself (da da daaaaa)

I've just replaced the engine cover struts on my C4 this afternoon, uprated OEM struts from Type 911 (I've got an Aero kit on mine) with a couple of spare clips and pins came to about £30.

The only way I could do the job was to remove the heater motor and the airbox as per the step by step guide on Jackels web site. I couldn't physically get my gorilla like arms into the back clips without removal.

http://www.jackals-forge.com/lotus/ The guide is listed on the left hand side menu under remove heater ducts and remove airbox.

Someone said they removed both items in about 10 mins, must work for a F1 team as it took me about 1.5 hours to do the whole job, however I didn't drop anything so have spare pins and clips now - typical. :thumb:

Replaced mine last week in about 40 mins. That was with a bit of cleaning and a beer in the mix though.

I only removed the airbox cover and found this gave enough clearance this side. Whole blower motor had to come out the other side though as suggested.

Thats good going.

My trouble is that I tend to spend too much time cleaning everything that comes off, standing back with a drink in my hand while admiring the car and inspecting the never seen before bits that I have just revealed so a 40 min job turns into a few hours
