Drumming

I'm not sure whether this is a major thing or not but at about 40mph I can hear a drumming noise from the rear, as the speed increases the frequency does too. I think it is wheel related as the same speed in different gears gives the same beat.

Does anyone know what this could be? The noise has been around for a few months now but could be getting worse.

what car is this on?
I would suspect in order of cost:
Loose wheel bolts
wheel balance/ buckled wheel
faulty wheel bearing
faulty cv joint
faulty differential

whatever it is, you should get it checked out asap.

It's a 1990 964 c2.

I don't think the wheel bolts are loose, not sure about the buckled wheel but I think I'd feel it, the bearing was changed a short while ago as for the other two...not sure I'll get it checked.

Hope this isn't too obvious - a stone or nail in the tread can make a ticking sound - have you checked that first?
