Hi,

Has anyone drilled holes in their airbox?

I have read on several forums that it is a must!

Drilled the box on my 964 about 3 months ago. Sounds great under heavy load but still quiet and civilised when cruising so not a bad mod!

Do it - no real difference other than the smaller the holes, the more you need to drill, but it all helps. There are links to pictures on this site if you search. or maybe'll I'll find them soon enough...

Worth doing as no downside but sounds better!

Cheapest mods you can do to make the car sound throaty. I wasn't convinced that it'd make noticable difference until I did it to mine. Much throatier esp on WOT. Some say there may be slight loss of power (esp when engine running hot) as a result due to hot air being drawn in instead of nice cool air, but I don't think the loss is great enough to be noticable. Anyway, if you don't like the sound of it afterward, you can always tape over the holes with duck tape.

Ah, this is what I was on about with my query about the Motorsound airbox, ie the product you buy to get the same effect as drilling the holes yourself...

Will I hear the throatier sound above my RSR mefflers??

I used a drill with a 2" hole cutter and cut about 8-10 holes from memory. look on
www.porsche964.co.uk
and there's instructions there under technical/mods i think.

I changed to the RSR muffler first before drilling the box. I'd say drilling the box makes at least the same amount of difference, if not more, than the RSR box. The RSR box makes low rev grumble a lot deeper, but when rev reaches >4k the effect is less noticable. Drilling the box however, won't make any difference until you put your foot down, then the throaty roar is gorgious! Be careful though, fuel consumption will drop like a stone 'cos you just want to keep your foot down to hear the noise! :D

I can vouch for that!

On mine I just removed the snorkel which slides out the main airbox housing thus making the main hole bigger. Is everyone saying that I will get even more noise, if I drill the box ?

I've heard you should keep the snokel intact, as it provides direct cool air.

Just cut the holes and keep everything else as is.

I was going to drill holes in the airbox on my sc but it looked to me like it would let water in as it is right underneath the ventilation grill. Is this not the case?

Not sure about the sc but in 993 the box cover where you drill is hidden in the corner, behind the normal intake port, facing sideway. If your box is facing top, directly under the grill, then I guess it might not be a good idea.

Hi ,

Drilled the holes today, did not notice any noise change.
