OK guys, I spoke to a couple of you last night about my idea for getting an E30 M3 (the very old boxy left hand drive one) for tracking and I think most agreed that it was a sensible idea.

However, I've just taken a Honda Civic Tyre-R out for a bit of a blast, and its superb! I'm thinking of p-ex my Motorway Muncher Honda Accord "Sport" (I'm sure that Honda should face some kind of legal action for trade disdription on that) and use it as a commuter vehicle and track day tool.

What do ya think??

Don't think it'll be as much fun as the E30 M3. You'll be more worried about bending it, it's more clinical and on the road, you need to cane it make it sing. Probably cost more to insure too, if that's an issue.

PS: Speaking from little experience with either car, of course! Best way...

james. If you fancy a cheap, fun FWD Honda for commuting/track days you would probably be better off with an Integra Type R - great fun (on the road, I've not driven one on the track) and apparently very able track cars. Nice and cheap now too, although you need to buy a carefully - a lot have been ragged (of course)

I agree that the Civic Type R is a pretty good machine, but it would never keep up with a track sorted M3, and it would cost you more. If you bend the M3 it's no real drama, bend it back and get it back on the track again !

If you could use the Accord as a towing car (?) then you could really strip out the M3 and get it set up aggressively with slicks / cage / plastic windows / no lights / lowered etc / etc - you could never do that with a Civic that you need to use on the road too !

For a dedicated track car it's not worth having Insurance, you don't need it legally. The unwritten rule (at least I think it's unwritten) is that with any incident on track it is very difficult to apportion blame so you pay for your own damage. If you intend to have the car road legal you can find road policies that include track cover (usually only for owner's club days though), but one off track cover is really expensive at around £100 per day per £10,000 of cover with a pretty huge excess (like half the value of the car !). For a £5,000 car I just can't see it being worthwhile. If you stack it, bin it and buy another one !

Cool, that's exactly why I asked.

I can keep the cost of the M3 right down, by keeping it purely for the track and towing it on the Honda, no Insurance, tax etc.

That's what I'd do. I once bought track day Insurance but - as Jamie said - for £150 for the car I was driving plus a £1000 compulsory excess, it was barely worth it.

EDITED TO ADD: Just as an afterthought, why go for an M3? You might have a lot more fun in a Caterham, maybe cheaper too...

It's a very old M3 that I'm going for, been looking around and can pick one up for £5K. Gives a bit of protection against the elements as well. :wink:

I have track Insurance as part of my Road Policy on my GT3, which covers me for any UK event whether it be a 3rd party event or a PCGB event. It costs £100 per event, and is for the full value of the car, the Excess is £3000. So I do use this cover for every event. It's just good knowing it's there in case something does happen. If I put it in the kitty litter and it needs some paint work, then odviously I won't claim due to the excess, but If I hit something solid, then it makes sense to have this behind you.

If anyone is interested then please ask and I will send you details of my broker. I put my Audi through them and they were actually cheaper for the two cars than the previous insurer.
