REALLY p*ssed off.....decided to change my battery on my 996 before driving down to Le Mans. Purchased a Bosche Silver top.

My friendly mechanic over the road agreed to give me a hand...we fitted a special battery unit to the terminals, keeping power to the car and keeping the ignition on...removed the OPC battery....but then mistakenley put the new battery in the wrong way round! Doh! You can probably guess...when we tried to connect the battery up there were sparks everywhere.!!!

Quickly changed the battery round...but damage was done...I had no radio,no CD player,no navigation....infact not even any screen display!!

A telephone call to Porsche supplied me with the info that i had to change a few fuses. Ended up in a Porsche garage in Rouen....even changed the fuse at the back of the radio unit itself. Now I have a screen display of sorts - i.e an "error" message or radio stations - but still no radio,no cd player i.e. no audio.

I dread that this is bad news....or should i say expensive. Have I b*ggered the PCM box of tricks??? Any suggestion anyone please? Sid the friendly spanner...what do you think?

As if to try and rub it in I even managed to get "nicked" for speeding by"Les Garcons dans Bleu"!!

Still....fanflippintastic Le Mans sortie.....despite the lack of music!

Cheers

Thanks for the reply Sid,

Ive a 2004 996 C4S. Its got a CD changer under the bonnet...along with an amp I presume(coz it had had the Bose upgrade when I bought it).

Ive only changed three fuses. One for the radio and the cig lighter down in the fuse

box panel by the drivers feet...the other was a fuse in the back of the PCM unit itself.

When the engineer in France plugged in his laptop box of tricks he couldnt "marry-up" what number belonged to what function.

Porsche in the UK were telling me that "marrying-up" this list wasn't required - aslong as I'd changed the fuses it should be ok. They even suggested there were TWO fuses on the back of the PCM unit - but there were'nt....I looked myself....just one red one.

They also suggested that after replacing the fuses I should lock the car up...leave it for 10 mins and then enter the car and try operating the radio etc again!!!

Tried that....no luck unfortunately.

Appreciate your help Sid....thanks for your all you effort.

Cheers

Mike

Hi Mike,

Exactly the same thing happened with me, under the warranty West London OPC replaced 2 fuses, the PCM and one in CD Changer. It took 2 visits first time they fixeed the PCM, and told me id need the CD Changer replaced as everything was on the same electrical loop :?
So when they wenet to change the changer it turned out to be just a fuse, i had the same error msg on the screen when the PCM fuse was replaced, in addition the telephone module was knocked out.

Hope this helps

hi mike there are some black self tapping screws holding the cover over the cd changer remove these, the bracket holding the cd changer in has two 10mm bolts undo these and carefully remove the black multiplug and the orange fibre optic cable. on the base of the changer where the cables are pluged in there are two or three screws undo these and then you will see the fuse you will need to get a fuse from maplins or any other electrical shop.sorry don`t know what rating the fuse is i looked but could not find the amp rating anywhere on the fuse

Cheers guys,

I'll try try changing the fuse on the cd changer first.....and let you know the result.

Do you think that that is all it will take.....I'll be very very relieved if that's the case!

Probably wont get round to it til saturday/sunday. will keep you posted.

Thanks again.

Sid and Arv,

Guys, thanks for help, advice and input....managed to find time to get the tool kit out

and take on the job of getting the fuse replaced on the bottom of the CD changer.

Started with removing the plastic trim then progressed as per Sid's instructions...25mins later had located glass fuse...and yes...it had "blown"! Jumped in the car nipped down to local H*lfrauds...£1.49 later had the fuses. Back home again and two mins later the system fully working!(Tho havent tested the telephone system yet). Bracket,Cd and trim put back in place.....Im delighted!

Without doubt it's probably saved me atleast an hours labour from local OPC. Did wonder after fitting it - if they would have been honest enough to diagnose fuse failure or whether they would have"found" some other reason. Sorry if that appears a little cynical &def not tarring all OPCs with same brush....but apart from one or two outstanding individuals at the local OPC can't say I rate their overall customer service or reliability.

Sid - your instructions were excellent - thank you, thank you, thank you! AND it got me into a TLC mode with the car....4 hours later a FULL interior/exterior valet had been duly completed...it's now looking "gorgeous"! But after Le Mans it DID need some TLC!!!

Best wishes

Still no power to changer or any sound

Wondered if anyone could help me. I have trawled through the threads in more detail over the last few days, have hauled the changer out to see if the fuse was blown as per the thread above (it wasnt - fuse was fine), checked all the fuses in the fuse box and yet I still have a) no power to changer and b) no sound from the stereo even though the head unit is powering on fine.

Any other thoughts for where I could look for the problem?

I am starting to think that it must be related to the BOSE 'amplifier kit' although I dont know where that is and whether I am barking up the wrong tree. Somehow, power to the changer is being side stepped by something and I can only assume that the remainder of the BOSE kit may be the issue since I believe I should still be able to listen to radio or the single CD in the head unit regardless of the Changers demise. My other next step is to take it to a dealer but from what I can work out they are likely to know even less, will suck through teeth and generally be useless.

Please help! As much as love the sound of my car, long journeys are much more testing without some decent tunes to accompany them!

Many thanks in advance.

From my (limited) understanding, the MOST bus is more of a loop from HU -> CDC -> AMP -> (phone) -> HU.

If there's no power to the CD Changer then that could well be breaking the connection on to the amp, hence no sound at all.

Get a multimeter on the power lines into the plug that goes into the bottom of the CD changer - that will at least tell you whether there's power to the CD changer. If there is then it could be that the CD changer is buggered.
