Does 911 love conquer all (aka how bad is the standard 997 plastic dash)?

I should also add that the excuse “it’s a 20 year old car” is not a good one. I turned up in a 23 year old car with a plastic dash. This is my interior:

Yes, you are right to pass as you will always be looking at the interior and replacement plastics are mega bucks! There will be plenty of others and you will find the one for you, prices have taken a bit of a battering at present so you should get more for your hard earned. My one had covered a high mileage but on the whole had been well looked after. There are companies who can work wonders with interiors but that is only adding to the initial cost. I contacted Dave the Trimmer about like for like replacement on my leather steering wheel. £450 plus vat, good job I was sat in a chair with arms on it when I read his email 🤣

Oh well, it was just not the one for you. Keep looking.

I remember being really frustrated at the cars I saw as they always looked great in the photos. Get a saved search set up on Autotrader with a Hartech keywork and get daily email alerts. Quite a few seem to come up on Gumtree so worth putting a Hartech saved search in there too. Have a list web addresses you can check every so often and see what comes up each day.

I suspect your missus will be happier when she sees and get to enjoy the car you buy. My wife likes driving the car more than I ever thought she would!

the challenge with interiors is the labour time to remove and reapply trim

It’s an interesting topic, I’m a bit late to the party here. It depends how long you’re planning to keep the car. My car was covered in (good quality really, when compared to other brands) plastic, but I wanted something a bit more special. So it wasn’t too much of a stretch to chuck a few k at the interior to slap Alcantara over everything. I did that several years ago, and it all still looks like the day it was done. So buying a car with a basic plastic interior wouldn’t bother me as if I was going to keep it long term I’d be happy to invest to make it what I want, but appreciate that’s not a view shared by everyone

My GTS has a plastic dash, and I didn't even notice until a couple of days later after getting it home, and I'd forgotten about it until now.

It seems to me that there's a somewhat Germanic attitude to 'leather' in this thread...

My pal has a 9972 3.6 C4 with full leather, and apart from the first 2-3 seconds, I'd soon forgotten about it. It is a nice zingy engine, I was pleasantly surprised at the driving experience.

I am not sure whether mine is plastic or leather- does someone have images ?

If it has stitching on the seams, leather. Otherwise, it's plastic.
I was out in thr GTS yesterday, and was reflecting on this thread and recalling my 997.2 C2S which had extended leather in Cocoa(mega btw). I came to the conclusion that not having extended leather was so far down the list, if the rest of the spec was spot on.

Mine is technically still a C4, so probably had a plastic dash, although it did have stitching on the seams. Since buying it in 2012 I had never even noticed whether it was leather or not; I was more distracted by the hateful Volcano Grey trim. At least it's brand new leather now.

How can you have stitching on a plastic dash?

Maybe I should dig out the build sheet to see if the original owner ticked the box? Bit redundant now 🤷‍♂️
