does anyone have a DAB radio in their car - im curious about them cos i would like to hear some English language radio stations instead of swiss"back to the 80's" radio every morning /evening.

Anyone got one fitted/recomendations?

It's the ariel thing that puts me off as well. Have 2 DABs at home and one at work - fantastic quality.

how big an ariel are we talking?

The one I saw was @8mm dia, and about 12" long, not good looking on a 993!

I have a Blaupunkt Woodstock DAB 52 unit in mine and I am very happy with the unit. I have the external aerial as for me that was the only option. Have a look at

http://www.bluespot.co.uk/dab.asp

as this page shows the various aerial options. There is one that is internal only but it must go on a screen that is neither heated nor metallical tinted. As I have a 3.2 targa this was not really possible for me. With a coupe you may well be able to put it on the rear quarterlight.

Cheers Steven - just how many stations can you get and how many do you listen to?

The best place to check what stations are available if you are in the UK is

http://www.bbc.co.uk/digitalradio/

as it is very postcode dependent. I don't know whether there is an equivalent in Switzerland. Where we are we can pick up about 30 stations. One of the major plus points is being able to get 5 live on DAB which is massively superior to MW! If you are tuned to a station that is also available in FM then if you lose the DAB signal the radio will auto switch to FM, when it does this you can really tell the difference.

Have not really done any long trips in the car yet, only got it at the end of August. So I am not sure how it will fair when you shift between the digital transmitters.

No, DAB broadcasts are via terrestrial antennas from local stations so you'll be stuck with Radio 24 and Radio Zueri See or whatever your local stations are.

I have a Woodstock DAB54 with the internal glassmount aerial in the UK and am very pleased with the reception. I rarely get dropouts even in deepest darkest Hants and Sussex. I think continental users don't have as much success with that aerial as their transmitters are in a different band than the UK and will probably require a proper external aerial. I want as far south as Italy last summer and found very few DAB stations in Germany, Switzerland or Italy that I could receive for more than a few minutes without interruption.

Cheers phelix - as you have some knowledge of my local radio stations, i presume you know the Zurich area?

Warren - record the Radio from the internet into MP3. Then you can get an MP3 Head unit and listen to yesterdays broadcasts ..... :D :(
