Hello,
I vaguely posted about this in December but lost interest. I would like to wire in an iPod to my 993 Targa. I was just about coping with an iTrip FM transmitter - far from ideal, especially in London - but recently switched to the new iPod nano which doesn't have the same connector. I bought the "Ten" charger/holder with a cassette adapter (designed for the iPod mini but works fine with the nano), as I have the old radio cassette unit. But the sound through the cassette is really bad - good enough for spoken word, but horrible for music. So I really want to look again at something better.
The Denison Icelink seems like the best way but it needs the CDR-22 head unit (CD radio), from a 996. First, does anyone know if that will fit in a 993? I forget the model number of the cassette unit (it has square "piano keys" numbered 1-10 on a removable panel), but it will drive a CD changer. Did Becker change the size or style of the connectors or is the would the Icelink work with what I already have? I would prefer not to have a cassette unit as it is a little ugly but frankly I don't listen to cassettes or CDs, and it has a very good radio so stuicking with what I have would be preferable.
If I have to go for the CDR-22, the issue is it seems to be quite expensive second hand for what it is - I'm seeing £150. Am I looking in the wrong place? Is there a cheaper source? I don't want to buy one that's been stolen - I've had enough of that with my wing mirrors - but it doesn't need to be new. Of course its advantage is it would match the car, unlike Pioneer, Alpine etc, and as this thing will basically be a radio and an amp for my iPod, any other bells and whistles are completely unnecessary.
But for that or a bit more I could get something much better - in particular a Sony CDX-DAB6650, which is compatible with the Icelink too but has DAB radio. I kind of want DAB but I am not sure why. I have a Pure DAB radio at home and hate it; the radio in my current unit is as good an FM radio as I've ever had (with station select by name taking away one of the big deals about DAB); and I am concerned that I might need an external aerial - which is unacceptable. What are the solutions? The other appeal of Sony is to be able to use an on-steering wheel remote control; 993 owners will be familiar with the full stretch to change the radio station, perhaps best not done at 100mph!
I saw in another post someone hadd experience of a Blaupunkt Woodstock. I haven't seen anythign to suggest it can work with an iPod, and the window-mounted aerial doesn't spound ideal - but am I wrong? Is it great?
D
oes anyone have an experience of a really great iPod setup in a 993 they'd like to share?
(Of course Apple and VW are already in cahoots so maybe that's one piece of good news from yesterday's announcement!)
