Couple of questions

I'm thinking of putting my name down for a new 997. I've been looking at the website and there are a huge range of extras which can really take the price to another level. Just wondered what you guys thought were the main options you need to ensure it doesn't go pear-shaped when it comes to selling the thing.

So far, I'm thinking sat nav and stereo upgrade (but are either of these any good? Isn't the stereo upgrade Bose?)

Also, I'm thinking about slate grey as the colour, but as this is a grand over normal metallic, has anyone any views on it, or any piccies they could host?

Cheers,

Ted

welcome ted...

a lucky man to be getting a 997.....

metallics always cost a tad more but 911 have traditionally had a better chance of being sold on the basis of popular colours... IIRC greens / bright colours & greys were not as popular.. so an extra £1k for grey is IMHO a lot....

but with a new 997 it's bound to be a good buy....as for the colour choice = it is what ever YOU want & like.. so if grey is your thing then get grey..

check out the official porsche site for all of the colours... but visit your OPC and demand they get a grey 911 in the showroom for you to look at ! and compare to other models... pictures will never do it justice

as for the sat nav & stereo upgrades .. these are modern day must haves.... have to admit the porsche sat nav system is awful.. based on my Cayenne experience (I think it must be a Blauplunk unti underneath!).... but as a modern must have & future resale an OEM Sat nav is sadly a must have...

an aftermarket eg. Alpine, etc version fitted properly would be a better bet for the right sat nav system...... but the OEM sat nav is the must have 'tick' on the options list....

Ask a Porsche dealer salesman and an independant Porsche specialist for a candid opinion.... and check the trade press and Autotrader.co.uk for prices of recent models. Buy "911 and Porsche world" and GT magazines and get a recent copy of the UK Porche owners club magazine and see what the trade and private owners are asking.

And of course look at the vehicles for sale on this site.

Then make your mind up. And buy what you most like.

Have a think about how long you intend to keep the car - BUT don't bank on a quick profit just because its new....

Then spend a day specifying the car at the Porsche dealership with the help of the sales staff - thats what they are there for.

Cheers guys. I think that the sat nav on the new 997 is a better version - apparently it's one of those DVD types (that's what the dealer said to me anyway).

I've also noticed that the rear screen wiper is a rather pricey £200 extra - now I'm inclined not to get this as my current car (Audi TT) copes quite well without it. However, has anyone taken this route and regretted it?

I'm not looking at making a quick buck by selling the 997 - it's just that I generally find that if I buy a new car that is a new model and has a waiting list, the depreciation nightmare is somewhat contained.

One last question, do many owners here park their cars on the street? This will be my only option and to be honest is the main thing that is holding me up...

Thanks again.

PS Sundeep - I'm Raven from the TT Forum BTW - so I guess this answers the question you were asking over there.... :D

Good work Raven..... rather a hello to the new "Ted" !

rear wiper.... for that much I wont bother..... and as you know with the TT, the aero style copes well with this.. as with any car with a heavily angled rear window...

and to be honest the rear wiper on the back of mine (a) gets almost no use but more importantly (b) it spoils the look...

street parking... aye.. live in london so have no choice and there are enough on the street here anyway.....

DVD sat nav is quicker & has more data (as onthe Cayenne) but it the system that porsche use which is fundamentally 'average' but still a necessary modern option... if I was in the same position.. I would prob tick that option as well..... anyway the nice big colour screen is a plus point !

regards

IMHO go for a silver / dark blue - they always sell well, sat nav, upgrade alloys, get a decent car cover and not bother with sound system/rear screen wipe (never used mine), the engine is all the music you wil need to put a smile on your face.

Just a thought: if you have a look around, there are some unbelievably funky satnav/cd/ipod/dvd/kettle/sauna installations that guys (particularly on the US 911 forums) have done on their cars. One advantage is that you can always take your kit with you when the car is sold on. If it were me, I would fit my own (if it were possible - and I would ask), but then again I have the earlier PCM I satnav on my 2002 C4S which, although still very useful, I understand has been greatly improved upon (and the one in your car will be much better). I think I'm going to try and get something more "state of the art" next year.

btw, I think I'm right in saying that if the 997 has the MOST fibre optic bus system (like the 2003/4 996s?) there are issues about upgrading your stereo, if you ever decide that you want something superior to the BOSE - you might want to do a search on the Rennlist forums on this. If I've got this completely wrong, someone please say so.

I park in Central London on the street - absolutely no problems so far, apart from the kind individual who chose to spit (impressive spittle volume) on my car whilst it was left parked on Borough High Street for 10 minutes last week. Since London's so huge, I always it depends on the area where you live. On my street (West London), there's a Turbo, at least three Carreras and a 993 Cab as well as mine, which provides some comfort.

I agree with what Josh says, except that, no matter how beautiful the engine sounds, I would always need a stereo - especially for those times when you are caught in London traffic.

Do I get the impression from the replies that Slate Grey is not that popular a colour? Must say I'm not keen on silver / dark blue / black because my last three Audis have been these colours and I fancy something new...

I wouldn't go for a stereo upgrade ... I didn't as the BOSE is a bit boomy (unless of course you are going to black out the windows and put a flourescent strip under the car). As for the rear wiper I beg to differ ... get it. The 997 has same slope to roof as 996 and I think you'll find you'll use it esp since you are street parking and it rains a lot in London. As for SatNav ... I'm not convinced you get your money back, you are buying a sports car not a rep-mobile ... so buy a map instead. As for colour Polar Silver.

rather its the classic colour catch 22......

the popular colours are bought & sold on the basis they are 'popular' and then there is the endless paradox of supply/demand & what colour sells a car..

obviously there are not as many slate grey cars out there as opposed to black ot artic silver.... but we 'so' many silver 996's out there.. it becomes a victim of its own success.... after all seeing a 996 that's isnt silver gets my attention more nowdays !

I've seen a few grey 996's.... they look ok but it's all down to personal perference...so go for the car YOU WANT.. if you have the option then do it..

I 'actually' wanted an arctic silver 993 as back in the 993 era it was a rarer colour.. but no more ! & cause I got fed up of the endless cleaning of my black TT ! but could find one at the right price.. but I am more than happy with my car, even more due to its special RS body kit....

latest 997 colour chart...

The point I was making was to stick with the standard stereo not to bother with upgrade.

Sat-Nav is must in any new car.

It has now become an option that most second hand buyers of "newer" car look for (especially on prestige marques). If you do not have it when you come to sell you will loose out to one that has and then of course you may have to drop your price to compete with those that have .... and most will have it.

This has now been backed up by all the trade guides and the motor trade in general.

But will you drop your price by > than amt paid for having the thing fitted in the first place? I'm not sure, which is why extras on cars really come down to personal choice. Bit like sports exhaust ... some people can't live with out them whereas others can't really give a monkey's!!

Apologies Josh - I had misunderstood.

I hate not having a rear wiper, when your spending nearly 70k you would think that it should be standard issue, but porsche dont get those huge profits for free!

Stereo upgrade is a waste in my opinion, especially if you have the sports exhaust.
