Silly question probably...

1996 993, left outside, UK.

Loads of condensation on all the windows inside.

Rubbers all look good.

Common fault?

Cheers,

Hi Sundeep,

I never use the aircon, but the windows are clean inside.

They clear when I get in and run the engine for five minutes obviously, but first thing in the morning they are all pretty wet.

Hi Kim

I think that water gets passed the sunroof seals and altough it doesn't physically drip inside the car it is still technically inside the cockpit and therefore condenses on the windows...........like you, I have a similar and all the seals on the car are in good nick and there is no wetness inside the car so that's the only explanation of this, new sunroof seals required I think!!

Wouldn't running the a/c clear the windows quicker and dry the car out as well, or is that only climate control?

My A3 has condensation today - cold night, and its as dry as a bone - aircon dries the air which reduces the problem. A quick check under the carpets front and back will show whether its leaking in.

I would go with the dirty windows. Give mine a good clean inside & the problem seems to go away.

Any kind of moisture inside the car will cause condensation - even a very small leak. As suggested a carpet inspection is a good idea to trace fault. Often blocked drains can cause water to migrate into the cockpit - from sunroof etc.

The current cold temperatures will be exagerating the problem

Update:

I've been driving the car now for a couple of weeks since posting this with the Aircon ON all the time and the problem with the windows misting up the next morning seems to have GONE.

So thanks to all of you who posted replies and if anyone has this problem...use your aircon throughout winter!

Thanks again,

Glad it seems to have sorted itself out.

AIRCON IS FOR LIFE NOT JUST SUMMER

Turn it on or pay the price, warns specialist

British motorists are continuing to risk an unwanted £583 bill by ignoring advice about the usage of air-con, according to warranty specialist, Warranty Direct.

The company said too many drivers switch off their air con during the winter leaving it prone to failure when the warmer weather returns.

Company spokesman Duncan McClure Fisher said: “Switched off for long periods of time, water or air can get into the system. The moisture will react with the refrigerant to create acid, which then attacks the seals and pipe-work leaving you with a hefty repair bill.”

Air con is also no longer the luxury it once was. Experts estimate that almost four out of five new cars now come fitted with the cooling system as standard. And data shows that air-conditioning units account for 1 in 20 mechanical failures with an average bill of £583 but as high as £1,661.

As well as regular use throughout the year, Warranty Direct also recommends annual maintenance checks which cost as little as £40 from an independent specialist.

IMHO - I am going for the theory that water/moisture is being drawn thru the sunroof seals as when I'm away from home and it rains I have mega condensation, when at home parked under cover no condensation so my theory and fix as follows:

cause: regular washing and wear and tear reduce the water repellancy properties of the (fabric-type) sunroof.

solution: when fully dried out and I am going to mask off roof with low tack tape except for the seals, then spray the seals thoroughly with Autoglym Fabric Roof Protector which is the car equivalent of Suede Protector/water repellant. I used this on my Z3 cabrio roof with excellent results, literally water off a ducks back.

I will post results of findings.

Aircon should only be switched off when giving chase to Glenn McM's old GT3 (SD's current stallion), it helps make up for the 60+ BHP deficit.....especially at the 'Ring!

Update/Result:

Soaked a load of above mentioned Fabric Roof Protector on my sunroof seals, plus when I have been applying zymol with applicator ensured this goes across the seals.

The car is parked under cover most of the time but after washing and in the rain this weekend normally I would expect a build up of condensation but happy to report there was virtually none. So my initial findings suggest this has worked.
