Hi all

The clutch pedal on my 911sc is quite hard to press down and seems sharp on release as far as i know its always been like this but is this normal and can it be adjusted, also i am looking at fitting a short shift kit but do i go for the factory one or the cheaper kits.

Thanks

Hi melox

There is a spring, situated underneath the car, that helps the clutch action on SCs. These are known to get stuck leading to a very heavy-feeling clutch. I can't find a picture on the internet showing it but am sure I have one at home. If you can't find the spring let me know and I will dig up the picture.

By the way, the new part is pretty cheap, £50 or so, so shouldn't break the bank. You can also do it yourself pretty easily. There is a description of the job in Wayne Dempsey's excellent book, "101 projects for your Porsche 911".

Opinions seem to vary about short shift kits, especially non-factory ones. The anti view is that they put more pressure on your gearbox because of the extra effort required to change gears, leading to extra wear and tear. If you want to go with a short shift kit I would go with the fatory kit. They are meant to be better (replaces more parts of the linkage etc, puts less stress on the gearbox and linkage, better quality parts etc etc).

Cheers, James

Thanks james for more help with sc will check out spring and replace if required,

By the way have just got the car back after having new stainless exhaust fitted by a company in Bristol who did a superb job, sounds great but seems to be running a bit rich might need adjustment on carbs ?

Thanks again

Carbs?

Unless you have modified your car you shouldn't have carbs. You should have CIS.

Thats what i what i ment to say ? is it normal to idle erratically on first start up it soon settles down

I think it is relatively common but not correct. The reason it settles down is that it warms up and stops using the systems that help it when cold (e.g. WUR)

If by "idle erratically" you mean it is surging up and down, that is usually a sign of excessively rich mixture. Get a mechnaic to adjust the mixture using an exhaust gas analyser, and not by putting a volt meter on the O2 sensor.

Melox,

Sharp Clutch: It is worth checking the pedal bushes and cable as well, both of which can become tight with corrosion, but are relatively easy fixes, especially if you are under the car and playing with that spring anyway.

I have a factory short shift kit which I fitted at the same time as a gearbox re-build to replace bad synchros and other gearbox carnage. It certainly decreases the throw, but by the laws of physics, does require a little more force. I would also strongly recommend ensuring that all the bushes and joints in the selection mechanism are in excellent condition - in my experience this made a huge difference.

Who in Bristol did the exhaust by the way?

Al G.

The clutch is a lot better after separating the spring coils which were rusted and soaking in oil .

The exhaust company is called long life stainless and i can highly recommend them web site -----
