How many of you take your kids for drives in your 996. My 5 year old daughter is quite tall for her age so won't fit comfortably in the back and just uses a booster seat in our current car, but there seems to be no way to deactivate the airbags in a 996 without buying a unit from Porsche that only works with a Porsche childseat. Funny that.At what point do you stop worrying about airbags and kids, surely they must get to an age when they are beneficial?

I thought airbags only need deactivating when using rear facing child seat?

Me too.

My 5' 2" missus fits in the back of the 993...

Good question,

Airbags definitely need to be de activated with a rearward facing seat. In some cars the manufacturers advise forward facing seats are OK in the front providing the seat is adjusted fully back. I'm not sure what Porsche advise, have a look in the handbook.

As a general rule kids are always safer in the back and also as a general rule the airbag will do you more damage than good unless you are about 5 foot plus and typically that means 12 /13 years old for a child.

Greg, surely your daughter will fit in the back if you have the passenger seat fully forward?

Airbags and children don't mix. I don't wish to scaremonger but in very extreme cases children in the front seat have been decapitated by the deploying passenger airbag.

I thought that children had to be at least 10 before they could sit in the front.

Both my girls fit in the back of the 993, well my oldest just fits and now complains a lot!

My 13 year old daughter fits fine in the back of my 993 and shes 5ft tall. I thought 996s had more room?

I have been advised by Britax not to use even a forward facing child seat where there is an active airbag. IMO not worth taking the risk.

I don't think the Porsche one which deactivates the airbag is hugely expensive- well under £200?

I suppose the wider question is how tall should someone be before it is safe to sit in a seat with an active airbag? There are plenty of adults under and around the 5ft mark.

Greg, tell your daughter to put up with it! Kids these days...

Don't mean to boast but we're quite tall so front seats are pushed well back. This was a hire car, by the way, but thinking of buying or maybe, dare I say it, getting a Boxster, where my daughter will have no choice but to sit in the front.

Have found that Tequipment do a kit for the 987 and I presume the 997 that deactivates the airbag and includes child seat and fittings for around £500 but not including fitting.

This kit has a key for turning the airbag on and off but this, and the switch in the dashboard, is not included as standard. Funny that.

There is a different kit for the 986/996.
