... According to an interview with Matthias Müller in this month's Total 911 mag. He says "we are discussing a GT4 model for the Cayman", and also a GT4 Cup car, and has not ruled out the possibility of a special edition 991 GT3 with a manual gearbox...

I presume that by "special edition" he means limited edition...

Personally I think this is a bit of cheeky marketing spin, intended to keep up interest in the cars, and keep the buzz going longer

... but who knows...

I reckon he's being seriously mischievous !! the cost of re-engineering
a manual box in place of the PDK box would be hugely prohibitive.

And it would be a good deal slower than the PDK. The speed of the upshifts
are just so much faster than we can change gear at....of course if you gave
a manual car a 75 bhp increase, with the weight reduction it might just
level the playing field....

The reviews I've read/seen for the new GT3 are all pretty much the same, they love it, it's mega quick, it's a track day weapon... but... a manual gearbox would have been the icing on the cake.

Is this kind of 'leak' an admission by Porsche that they should have let Andreas Preuninger build the car he (probably) really wanted to?

..Maybe, I think that if the powers to be at Porsche were trying to nick
any 458 or new Gallardo customers they had to go with PDK...

Changing gear is old hat...lol :frustrated:

I believe scientists can make babies in test-tubes now, but most still prefer doing it the old-fashioned way.

..er right...that's pretty random.

Cayman GT4 - a future classic, if it ever exists

Youll be out of those £120k 3s and into a Cayman

You read it here first

I like the article a lot. It's very short, but inciteful. He gets asked about the fact that the Cayman would probably be 'better' than a 911 if it had more power, and his response is basically "Yes? And? It probably would be? So what. The 911 is king so... Yeah, whatever" (my words not his, but the essence of what he said). Great stuff. The theatre of Porsche lives.

Stealing 458 and Lambo punters at the expense of Porsche customers.....net gain? The business plan would have been an interesting read.

I know of a race team in the UK currently looking at building a GT4 Cayman, so they'll be interested in this - but there are already GT4 Caymans:

I've not seen a 991 GT3 Cup yet but it would be interesting to know how much the gearbox is a derivation of PDK - or if its completely different. I heard that something like 22 are coming to the UK for Carrera Cup - its a very expensive car.

Chris.

We'll no one's getting into a nice new 991 GT3 any time
soon.
The 'production delays' are apparently based on pdk
cooling issues (upgrade of the oil cooler deemed to be
necessary) and more concerning is the failure of some con
rods at high rpm on a few of the test mules. Another
component upgrade deemed to be required before any
customer gets his/her hands on one. And it revs to 9000
rpm....yeah right..

Hang on a minute, lads – I've got a great idea.

Why not get the driver to move the gears themselves?

Would save on all that jiggery-pokery requiring extra oil cooling.

People may even enjoy the challenge and visceral interaction :dont know:

:o

That's incredible... I'm amazed this car could get so far down the development lifecycle with issues like this... If only they had caught the Carrera 997/997 IMS issues that soon too.... I wonder if this will have a knock on impact on the new RS. Imagine if they decided the new GT3 engine wasn't good enough and decided to give new RS an upgraded Mezger... And manual gbox... Hmmm .. Sounds familiar... :bandit:
