I have it from 2 very good sources( staff at an OPC returning from courses at Porsche GB) that the new cayman is faster than a 997 around the Nurburgring

Apparently Porsche don't want to advertise the fact!!

Hi

I think I might be one of the few that actually thinks the Cayman is a good-looking car, although two seats are just not enough for me.

With it being mid engined (rather than arse engined like the 911) together with extra stiffness over the boxster it was to be expected that it would soon catch the std 911, however not to worry the 997 C2S is still 8 seconds quicker!

Here a few times for comparison..I assume that the Cayman is lapping round the 8:07 mark if it is 8 seconds quicker that a 997 ??

Which makes it about 25 seconds quicker than a boxster S !

7:32 - Porsche Carrera GT (612HP)7:46 - Porsche 996 GT2 7:56 - Porsche 996 Turbo 7:59 - Porsche 997 Carrera S

8:07 - Porsche 996 GT3 8:12 - Porsche 993 Turbo (430 HP version) 8:15 - Porsche 997 Carrera 2

8:17 - Porsche 996 C2 8:28 - Porsche 993 C2 8:32 - Porsche Boxster S

hiya where did you get these lap times from??

cayman to be as quick as a GT3?? surely not!!

No offence to anyone - but you have to be a DAMN good driver to get anywhere near those times and quite frankly a missed gear change, taking the wrong line and your time is way out anyways so personally I wouldn't let it get me down. A good friend of mine - who recently sold a Carrera GT prefers his Boxster S over a 997. And being a professional driver he can get around a track faster in a 2.7 Boxster than I could in 996 Turbo!

serv i agree with you but you have to presume the lap times are all good and done by the same driver, a cayman is almost 100hp down on a GT3 so that is either a big slap in the face to the 996 or congrats for making such a quick car,not sure where i sit on this!

:And being a professional driver he can get around a track faster in a 2.7 Boxster than I could in 996 Turbo!
: small track and not a lot of straights then??

Good point Rob, the only solution as far as I am concerned is have one of each a 997 and Cayman and Boxster for sunny days and of course the Cayenne to lug around the tribe!! Who do I make the check out to..... :)

In regards to the track, there is a special testing facility in Kobe, Japan - lots of turns some straights but to be honest with you he has a lot of skill! I can get around fairly quickly but up against a pro......

Hi

The times I posted were done by Walter Rohrl, as about as good as it gets with regards Porsche test drivers.

With regards the time for the Cayman I stuck that in based on the assumption that it is 8 seconds quicker that a 997, which is the current rumour ?? Not seen any data to back it up as yet !

here is the link where I found the times

back in the real world - There is currently an obsession with regards lap times at the Nurburgring and German car manufactures ( as well as Radical) There was a good article written recently by Richard Porter – Evo magazine stating that performance at the ring doesn’t really translate to a British b- road.

Just to demonstrate some of the funnies that the ring times throw up ..a R32 Golf is between 2 & 5 seconds quicker than a Honda NSX, well in my year of owning an NSX no golf driver ever overtook me
