Cat D repaired?

Hi all. Just joined so I can ask this question as thinking of purchasing a 996.

Basically ive seen a 996 advertised that is cat-d repaired. I know that it means its been written off, but what implications does this have on Insurance etc? If i were to have a rac inspection and hpi check and it was all clear then is it ok to purchase or shoud i steer well clear despite it being a bargain?

Welcome to the site Paul. I am not sure about Cat-d repaired regarding Insurance, but definitely do get an inspection and definitely don't use the AA or RAC. If you are seriously interested in the car take it to an Official Porsche Centre or better still, one of better independent specialists e.g. JZ Machtech, GT One etc. The AA/RAC just don't know enough about these "special" cars and the report will really only tell you whether or not the panels are straight and if the dash has any scratches.

A cat d is an uneconomical repair write off - but safe to repair and put back on the road - can be awkward to shift on later and most dealers will not touch with a bargepole for a PX so you are more than likely looking at a private sale later on.

I looked at a couple of cat d's when i got mine - one was nice but sounded like the wheels were fouling on full lock so i walked away!

Thanks for the welcome and the replies guys.

I'll have to have a think whether its worth the hassle of haing to try and resell it.

Also need to investigate whetehr it affects Insurance. Might give an Insurance company a tinkle and ask.

You can finance ( with a finance co ) and insure a CAT D , but no respectable trader will buy or take one in part ex, unless its for nothing, buy a 993 or save longer for a 996

I emailed cleaves motor salvage and they replied quite quickly. Seems it varys from case to case. It the car was repaired properly and i have it inspected by porsche or a good independent, theres no reason not to buy a cat d car. The only problem i might have is reselling, but i figure if i get one cheap enough in the first place then it shouldntt be too much of a problem, and owning a 996 has gotta be worthe the hassle.

Cat D.

Pay more and get a straight 996...even one with miles on it or lhd.....or buy a 993. Once you get invlolved with a cat d you are ramping up your risks considerably. Hell, stick some extra£££ on a card, sell your family, but buy a straight car. One day you may need to liquidate quickly.
