Cat C/D 968 cs advice

Morning guys , it's been awhile since I posted on this forum and I found it invaluable regarding my C4s in the past, so here's my dilemma.
I'm thinking of purchasing a 968 club sport with under 80,000 miles owned by a mechanic friend of mine who specialises in Volkswagen Audi .
He has had the car for a year and in some mechanical work that needed doing and some electrical work, and now the car is sat in a body shop awaiting for a front and repaint, Stone chips on the bonnet and bumper and some micro blistering on the front wings .Now I know I would rather buy it as it is and restore it myself .
Now the car was written off 17 years ago with rear quarter damage , there is no pictures or documentation of the damage but the rear wing was not replaced . It was purchased by the previous owner and repaired to a very high standard and then dry stored for the last 16 years with occasional use weekend .
My intention is to completely strip back the bodywork on the car take it back to bare metal to expose what damage was done to the rear quarter all those years ago and then photograph the restoration from there .
now I'm looking at the average prices of the 968 club sport and they are above the 30 K now and I know none of these have been written off, but the question is what will a completely restored 968 be worth compare to a non-Cat c/d, and would it put potential buyers off the car of this age does it really matter it was written off 17 years ago is there going to be a cloud over it?
I'm just thinking if when the car is fully restored it will have cost me less than 20 K to buy and restore, and I'd like to think I would get my money back after enjoying the car or is that just not going to happen.
I would appreciate any advice on this please

Not sure if you are looking at it the right way, doing the kind of restoration you are talking about is never going to be profitable. So if that is your main motivation then I would look for something more modern as cars of this age can be costly to get up to a standard and could have many problems. A 968 with the history you mention is currently not going to be worth more than £20k fully restored IMO. Yes there are cars listed for £30k+ but they have been for sale for a long time as the prices again IMO are a bit optimistic shall we say.

On the other hand if you really love the car and see yourself keeping it for a long time then you would benefit from the extra expense of a serious restoration and not worry to much about the cars actual value as you would be keeping it for the forseeable future. If this is the case then go for it!

Thanks for the reply, yes it is going to be a long time project, use the car occasionally over the next couple of years, the when the time is right will undertake the restoration.
After reading the new article in evo.co.uk magazine, I'm looking forward to collecting the car next week!

Congratulations! As the owner of a 968 Sport (albeit currently in storage) you won't be disappointed.

If you haven't found it already, the 968UK forum is a great source of technical information and advice.

Don't think you'll go too far wrong if bought at the right price. I've no problem buying cat cars if repaired properly and have actually bought a 968 cat C in the past which had been damaged on passanger side rear quarter. Got it on ramps and checked over inside and out and you would never know it had been damaged. It was off road 10 years. My local Porsche guy checked over and while he could tell it had been repaired confirmed it was all ok. I'd have no hesitation buying that car at what sounds like a good price and indeed am actively looking for a 968 project so if anyone knows of something PM me. Cheers

Finding a 968 S / CS without a Story [declared or not] is going to be tough in any case, so having one where you can read the actual Story, rather than a version that the Seller wants you to hear, is going to be better IMO..

Also, I know that a 968 CS [attached], having had a disagreement with an Armco / Track Day Write Off Insurance etc. at Brands, restored by a "very well respected" Porsche Specialist was sold on for a pretty penny as "original panel, original paint".. So.. :dont know:

There's a black NZL one going on the Autotrader, originally saw it about at Ruf Uk, and since then it's been passed around which has put me off. That and the colour is somewhat dull but worth checking if...

The other one is the maritime blue one at Chelsea Cars. Its been for sale for a couple of years. I say that as i popped down about 2 years ago to see it. Supposedly owned by someone working in Dubai. Colour is great but the looked shabby for 38 grand or so... Link below...

Anyway just a quick post to say if you want the low down on any 968s for sale in the UK you could do worse than poke your head into the Porsche 968 Club forum below. There is a lot of knowledge and specific vehicles can sometimes be identified along with previous owners and any stories associated with the car, including if it has been written off, tarted up to sell, rust bucket etc..

What username did you sign-up with, I will send a private message to the forum owner "stu2000" to see what is up. Several new members in the last few months so is working for some...
