Carrera dilema

I am in the process of researching a 1988 model year 3.2 Carrera coupe I found in Spain and am considering buying.

Even though, the car is in pretty good condition and has a fairly complete service and ownership history, there are a few areas in this Documentation that raise questionmarks.

1. There is no data sticker on page 3 of the service book even though all ID numbers check out.

2. A German dealership that sold it used in the past - stamped sale Document - and is shown as having serviced it for 3 or 4 years - with their stamp in the service booklet - cannot find the VIN or any record of the car in their computer database.

As I said, the car checks out beautifully mechanically and cosmetically and with 204000 kms on the clock is not trying to hide its age.

The owner has been very co-operative in providing information and answering all my questions up to now and appears genuinely surprised of thes
e background inconsistencies.

Any thoughts?

How strange. Does the German dealer remember the car at all? How long ago was it at the dealer?

It appears that the car was actually

  • delivered new by Cologne dealer on 08/10/87;
  • serviced twice (stamped once!) by dealer in Bonn 11/10/89, 01/10/90
  • service-stamped by original Cologne dealer three times 27/09/91, 28/07/93, 07/06/94;
  • then sold as a used car again by them on 09/06/94!
  • serviced three times by German independent Porsche garage (no stamps!) 17/08/95, 09/03/97, 17/04/98; waiting for any records they may have!
  • no further record until
  • first Spanish registration 14/02/00 and then again 28/04/00!
  • Spanish MOT 09/10/01
  • service-stamped twice by Spanish independent Porsche garage 09/07/01, 14/03/02
  • Spanish MOT 01/10/02
  • sold to current owner 05/11/02
I'll be visiting Spain and Germany to check out things in person with the dealers and garages and try to find out more.

This must be one very nice car to deserve all this effort on your part! What recent Documentation does the owner have? If he has a stack of bills from the last say 5 years I wouldn't worry about service history too much. I guess the issue is though, is this car what it claims to be regarding VIN etc. Hmmm.
