Hello,

sorry it's a revisit again. But I have a dillema. I have budget for either. I've been test driving 964s and 3.2s. my wife prefers the 964 over the 3.2 (nicer interior and exterior). Coupe only. I can get my hands dirty on working with engines/suspension. Not major work however. From my research, the 3.2 is a good reliable car. Being that I'm dipping my toes into the world of 911s, i would like to have a good experience. What do you suggest guys? looks like the 964s have a fair bit of electrical gremlins. dillema dillema....

My budget also stretched into 964 territory. But as it was just a car for fun I decided to go for the 3.2 and do without things like abs and air-con with a view to getting a really good example of a simpler more reliable car.

I guess it depends what youre going to use it for.

3.2 v 964....

Simply set out to buy the very best example you can find. Any 911 will make you happy but a moneypit will ruin your experience. Dont compromise on the quality for anything. Find the best for your budget.

If its a tidy 964 or a great 3.2 - take the 3.2 and tell the missus its the only one available

If its the power steering she likes, buy a 3.2 and keep her out of the driving seat.

You will know from now that the 964 is more complex and carries more risk& servicing costs. But if you are handy with the tools you can do a fair bit yourself, there is such a lot of support available when you own a 911.Go for it.

hahahaah... yeah I'm sure she will be turned off by the lack of power steering. Heck she wasn't too crazy about the 3.2's tranny anyways. I've to admit though that I do like the 964 in terms of interior trim and exterior. It's a bit cleaner IMHO.

right now it's hard to find a good 3.2 with decent mileage. Heck the price is still fairly strong for a late model 3.2. It's comparable to a 964!

For the same amount of money I'm sure you can get a 3.2 in better condition. So I would get the 3.2. I personally think it looks better than a 964, with its classic looks. The 964 is so damn compicated that even if most of the know problems had been sorted, if you are unlucky enough to get a duff one, it will really burn a big hole in your pocket. Plus the fact that you are more likely to be able to work on the 3.2 yourself. Some of you say that the 964 is almost the same price as 3.2....well there's a reason for that.....

Now the 964 owners are really going to hate me for this. However, if you have got a well sorted 964, I'm sure it is a fantastic car, but it would cost more than the 3.2 to buy and to keep. So it's really up to you (and you wife ) to decide if the "extra" bits are worth it.

I agree with Butzi. The 964 is my least favourite 911 and think about it if you take a 3.2 and it costs less to run you can stash the extra money away and save for a 993.
