I have been watching the market for a while and really do like the look of the 996's.I recently found a black c4s for sale fairly locally which has been owned by the vendor for a number of years and had recently had the usual big ticket items replaced, such as clutch, rads, brakes, tyres etc.It was cosmetically a little challenged but I was happy to put a bit of effort into minting it back up and considered that in the grand scale of things the cosmetics are a minor consideration. So I drive the car, check everything works, listen to the engine, check the tail pipes for a variation in colour and pretty much all the usual things that you can do yourself.I was just about to do the deal and decided on advice to have a camera check of the bores.
A formality I reckoned as I was pretty confident that this was a very sound, honest car...can you guess whats coming next??

Serious scoring on 5 and 6....gutted!!!

I really did like this car and I now have mixed emotions of disappointment and relief..
I have even thought about negotiating a deal to allow for the repair, but the figures involved appear truly insulting to a vendor who has been oblivious to the potential problems on these cars until I spoke to him.
Not sure which way to go with this now, just wanted to share my experience.

Well, make the offer anyway. You never know. IF the car was that good, you might find some common ground.

Aside from that (a) welcome to the club!

(b) Also, check out Spectral's C4S...... very nice example :)

agreed! 8)

Adrian - where did you get a camera check of the bores done? I'm also in the search (autos so not the same car you're looking at) and your story has got me worried again.

The camera check was done at sport and classics in knutsford.Incidentally this is the same place that has done lots of recent work on this car so I can 100% recommend this garage and its impartiality regarding checks. As I say a big disappointment but also a big relief.

I am now getting to thinking that the only type of car to consider would be one that has been reworked by autofarm or hartech. As I understand it even cars with with new engines have only had replacements"like for like".So still still stand the same risk of sudden demise.I am happy to stand corrected on that point. :thumb:

not my understanding - new engines have a 'modified' IMS I've been told..

I was thinking more about the bore scoring which has now taken over from my previous paranoia about IMS failure. :?:

ahh, understood.
Not too sure about the scoring issue, but I would guess this can be minimised on any engine with regular (non scheduled) oil changes and the like?
mine is done every 12 mths irrespective of use/mileage and whether it is actually due or not

You car is absolutely beautiful. :thumb: I really am stuck on getting a basalt black with black though.

I have placed a wanted ad for a car now.So if anybody knows of a black car for sale ,please send me a message.
Cheers
Adrian
