Hi there, I am a first time would-be Porsche owner. I am currently looking around for a early 993, budget approx. 24k.

I have been offered a 97 P-reg 993 Carrera 4S for £ 27k. mileage 102000 kms ( 63k miles ).

What should I be looking out for... is this price too low for the model and year ?

Need your expert advice.

Thanks,

Aram Friedrich

Hi Aram,

This isn't a *bad* price, it is afterall a C4S with all the nice turbo bits, plus the mileage is acceptable. It'll also have the 285bhp engine which is good.

If it's a C4S you're after, I'd certainly take a good look at it, there aren't that many around.

Thanks admin,

Well it's not that I'm after a C4S, just been scouring all the usual secondhand mags, dealers, sites etc for some weeks now. I have test driven at least 4 993's, almost bought a '94 L reg C2 for 20k, but backed out as the mileage was high ( over 108 ooo miles ).

I will be seeeing the C4S tomorrow, will report back to the forum next week.

Later,

Aram

Hi Aram,

I am in the Market for a late C4S and the price your quoting sounds very low. Can the mileage be verified and does it have a valid Service history? They are pretty rare and as such command strong prices. If you get to drive it I would appreciate your opinion with regards to the difference between the normal carrera 2 or 4 and the C4S, with this I mean the driver feedback etc.

Regards,

Mossy

Hi Aram!

That's a low price! Around 50.000€ is the average. Are there any options on your car? Mileage is low, but you could still read my advise to Andy under the topic "Hi mileage 993" My 4S is 107.000km and I had those problems this year. Now according to my Porsche specialist, the hydraulic steering should'nt have any problem at all. So I take it as a bad luck.

Cheers

Hi Guys,

As agreed here is my comeback after viewing the 993 4S yesterday.

First thing I noticed was that the rear tyres looked different from each other. One actually protruded outside the arch line whereas the other did not. This is a mystery since they are both 285 / 30 size.

2) Also there is a leak ( assume oil ) from under the chassis just in front of the right rear wheel ...steady drip !.

3) During driving there was a definite left pull in the wheel, also woolly brakes ( pads must need replacing ). The dealer ( independent trader said it was due for a small service. )

4) Mileage 103000 ( assume km as this is a LHD apparently brought in from Germany two years ago. Tax disc expired two months ago, last renewed in Leicester although trader in Slough. After my questioning him on his, he said he had not yet taken ownership, therefore not taxed it yet.... dodgy ?.

5) Overall driving impression very good, interior good except for some missing radio preselect buttons.

6) Asking price 26995, but he constantly offered to discount if I took it as is.

What comments from the inner sanctum of experts in 2nd hand 993 4S's ?

Thanks,

Aram

Run away. This sounds like a lot of trouble. The last thing you want is a 911 with known problems (bearing in mind that if that leaky engine needs rebuilding to fix the leaks you will be looking at £000s)

If you are still looking for a "cheap" 993 I came across this on 911 & Porsche World's website:

"
911 CARRERA 993 perfect original condition, 1994, RHD, FPSH, Amaranth, 81K, 4 new Pirellis, leather, a/c, sunroof, genuine reason for sale, £26,995. Tel: 01332 780998 or 07885 435340. P1102/159"

Don't know anything about it but it might be worth a look.

Aram

Everyone is probably getting sick to death of me saying this but before you do buy the car of your dreams make sure you get a PPI (pre-purchase inspection) done by a specialist garage. It will cost you about £150 and will be the best money you ever spent, even if (especially if) you then decide not to get the car. A lot of people don't, some get lucky (good for them) and some don't. Those that don't get lucky get stung...badly.

Cheers, James

Hi Aram

the oil leak in front of the right rear wheel must come from the oil tank which is there somewhere. But it could also be a bad gasket on the draining bolt.

If the car is pulling on one side it's probably due to what you noticed with the rear tires... Very strange!

I didn't see the car but I think James's advise is a good one.

The next adress is where I found my 4s,
