Buying advice

Alright. I just got my drivers liscense and i'm close to having enough money to buy a new car. My budget is around 10.000 Euro's.

I could as well buy a Seat or something for that money. But when looking around on the internet, i see loads of Porsches for well less than this amount. I'm personally totally in love with the 928 S4. In my opinion the most beautiful Porsche ever built. But i hear that it requires quite a bit of maintence.

If i'm gonna buy a car, i don't feel like repairing stuff on it all the time. I want a reliable car, that's also affordable to keep driving.

What models are reliable and good. I'm no fan of the 911, so forget that one.

What matters more with vintage Porsches, age or milage? Cause i also see lots of them that are only 7 years old but have 200.000 kilometers on them.

Welcome!

As a buyer, good condition is the most important thing. A newer, lower mileage car is not necessarily a good one.

For 10,000 euros, I'd be looking at a 944 S2 (or maybe a 968 if you are very lucky). They are reliable and great handling cars, and parts are not too expensive and you could learn to work on it and modify it yourself.

Join your local Porsche Club- other owners will be happy to give you specific advice on what you are interested in and will know of good cars for sale.

A cheap 928 is tempting but it will probably cost you lots of money to maintain.

Good luck!

Robert

Hmmm... i see. The thing is, i think the 944 is well, not that great looking to be honest. Especially the back. The 968 are all a lot more expensive and out of my range.

Are 928's really unreliable and expensive to maintain? I'm talking about the S4's then. I've heard diffrent stories. One tells me you gotta sell your arm and your leg if you want to drive one, the other tells me you can dive many many miles without much maintence.

If it comes to Porsches, is mileage really important? I know cars like volvo's can drive a million... is this the same with Porsches?

Sounds like you really want a 928 then! Which means you will not be happy with anything else.

I do not know very much about the details of 928s, but I know this much; if you get a good one, it will not be too bad to maintain, as long as you can afford the petrol!

But if it goes wrong, they are very complex cars, and parts are very expensive.

Remember it was a £90,000 car new, it has depreciated but the running costs have not.

There is a 928 register in the porsche club great britain forum who I am sure will give you specific advice on what they are like to run.

Robert.

I don't think 928s are inherently unreliable, especially later ones. But if they do go wrong they cost big money to fix, and the bits necessary aren't always available - unlike 944s, 968s and 911s.

You're not gonna like this, but if you've just passed your driving test get to understand driving via some experience in small cars. Then you can safely graduate to something more powerful. If you're young and inexperienced the cost of Insurance will be more than the price of a 928...

Is it really that much of a petrol guzzler? Man it sounds it's a really expensive car to drive and keep driving. I don't like the sound of that....

Can you please give me the link to that forum by the way?

Thanks for the replies guys! :)

You will be very lucky to see much more than 15-20mpg from a 928.

As Maxy says, why not start with something like a 944, get used to the feel of a powerful rear drive car (also I may get shot down here, but I will bet a 944 is a sweeter handler than a 928), and get used to the Porsche scene- where will you get it serviced, where to get cheap parts, Insurance etc.

the 944 is one of the best handling, most well balanced cars i have driven - plus Fiat's Fool has one - so they MUST be good.
