Boost pressure

Hi All,

Haven't put many miles on my 996T since I collected it from RSJ last November but those few miles (about 1000) have certainly put a smile on my face.
Went for a short blast today and, for the first time, had the boost
pressure reading displayed. The car really does fly compared with my previous C4S but I noticed the pressure never went above 0.6 bar. I realise this reading can be effected by ambient pressure but do you guys think this is a correct figure for a standard Turbo or have I got some air leaks in the system?

Baz

Normal for a non mapped K16 equipped turbo, you might see .7 sometimes but sounds fine to me.

Mines the same. 0.6 to 0.7 bar occasionally. That's a bog standard 996tt (non x50) so KKK16 turbos.

Even though the boost reading reaches expectations, that doesn't mean there's definitely no boost leaks, so it's still well worthwhile check tightening all the pipe work when the opportunity arises.

Boost pressure test is a must on these cars !

Have it mapped and enjoy 1.1 :D

Many thanks for the replies - nice to know my car is producing the correct pressure. Don't think I'll go for a re-map though - at the age of 66 the power is quite enough for me thank you!
Any other old gits with 996Ts out there?

Baz

Yes I think I qualify, bought the Turbo to tick off a bucket list item and to replace an S1 111S Elise that was getting awkward to get into. The only issue I have had was when in a traffic queue and overheard some local lads saying , "Cool look at that car, really wicked, but why are Porsches always owned by fat old men?"

Oh well

Surprised a standard turbo only boosts at 0.6 to 0.7 bar. Mine makes 1.0 bar and I thought it was standard, checked the wastegates and they are nice and free. It is seriously fast though.

If your car is displaying 1.0 bar and it is not mapped you may have a faulty boost control valve (n75).

Mine is Revo remapped and the other day, outside temp of 2 degsC, I pulled 1.2 bar......

I jus' 'bout came in my pants !!!

On a 'normal' temp day 0.8 - 0.9 is regularly seen,

I'm going to take it to NineExcellence later in the year to get all the hoses and stuff checked out and probably get one of their sooper-dooper IPD plenum upgrades, then that will about do me until they prise the ignition keys from my cold, dead fingers, hopefully when I'm about 95 yo and with a big smile on my face having been caught out by the jealous husband of a 25 y o nympho...

I'm 57 and lovin' it !!!

On these cars boost can go up and down depending on outside temperature . Very hot day boost tend to be low. Seen some serious boost early in the morning or late at night on summer days.

I have a 2002 non X50. The other day I wanted to check boost readings. Cruising along at 40 then would bury the accelerator.

I was getting a constant 0.9 Bar for 5-6 seconds.

As far as I know the car is standard. Are there any other signs which would indicate it has been mapped?

Bazza, I am also an old git and people just drop their jaws when I drop down a gear and whoosh past them with a big grin!
On the subject of boost pressure - perfectly normal for a non -X50 Turbo.

Mine regularly showed 0.9 before being remapped by 9E

But I could have had a dodgy N75 valve which has now been replaced.
