Make sure when you get your car checked for a fault or renew your MOT, you ask the main dealer to get your permission before they proceed with any repairs. Here is a costly lesson:

1) MOT = £32 (acceptable)

2) Supply/replace frayed seatbelt = £275 (unacceptable) - get one from a scrap yard for £20 and fit it yourself.

3) Check/adjust a faulty engine sensor = £210 (unacceptable)

4) Check for blown fuse = £315 (unacceptable)

5) ancillary items = £162 (unacceptable)

Total bill was £994 (inclusive of vat)

Note, this was NOT a service. It was request to check an electrical fault and get a new MOT! Dealer was Lancaster Porsche of Cambridge and yes, I asked them to consult with me before undertaking any expensive repairs.

Moral of the story is beware of well dressed mechanics bearing free coffee!

ps, the car was a 928 S4.

I'm assuming that they didn't consult with you before proceeding.

If this is the case then refuse to pay the full amount (negotiate) and send trading standards in and write to the local press and tell them you will be posting on BBs etc. etc.

I have had this problem before (not with an OPC) and kept the pressure up for a reduction to a fair amount. It worked.

For 2. get them to remove the part.

There's no way checking for a blown fuse can be £315. How long did they have the car for - ask them to show you the time sheets created by the mechanics i.e. get them to justify this and the rest of the work.

Hope you get somewhere with this.

Yes, they didnt consult me before proceeding. This even happened some time ago (approx 2 years ago).

I wrote to Porsche GB as I though it was bad practice (to rip off customers) by charging astronomical fees, however, they felt there was nothing wrong with what had happened.

At the moment I have a 993. From now on I only use the main dealer to stamp my annual service. Fortunately, its been a very reliable car, over the last 2 years and about 30k miles.

If there are any main dealer mechanics thinking about starting their own garage - "I say go for it" But remember the ordinary folk - not everyone who owns a Porsche works for a finance house, so dont do as the big boys do.

Isn't it about time someone compiled a list of specialists who do as good a job so that the old 'dealer service=resale value' thing can be left behind? I've had appaling experience with main dealers (incl the one mentioned above) charging stupid mioney AND NOT KNOWING WHAT THEY'RE DOING. Really good specialists (eg JZM, Paragon etc) seem to charge sensible money and are real expert / enthusiasts. Shouldn't these people's name in your service book be worth just as much?

I think the OPC's benefit ridiculously from 911 first-timers not knowing the difference and hold us all over a barrel as a result. Anyone got an idea for how to police the specialists / award experience-based forum points etc?

I guess it really depends on what you want to do with the car in the long term: keep it/sell it. I am not to keen on official dealers for any cars as I don't think they even consider treating the car as their own car. If you go to a reputable independent you are happy with and look after your car surely that's O.K.

Hi everyone I'm new here ....can't believe the first thing I have to do is rant and rave about main dealers who as far as I can tell seem to clones from a bad egg somewhere in the distant past.......I haven't used any main dealer since 1985 and wouldn't again unless I could supervise the proceedings....(I recommend Autostrasse in Essex) after having repaired the 'gearbox' in my SC sportomatic (a repair which lasted a year before I found someone who could diagnose the real problem and fix it) they broke the aerial whilst washing it ....I remember having a blazing row with the then 'manager' of the Isleworth AFN Porsche dealership on the pavement (showroom was inaccessible to me at the time as I use a wheelchair) because they left all the dashboard wiring hanging loose and had dirtied the carpets...no apology and then they begrudgingly put matters right...from what I have heard from many Porsche drivers this is typical behaviour of all but a few main dealers....I think it might be down to a snobbishness on the employees part that in working for Porsche they think the can do what the hell they like...... Porsche AG however have a very different attitude to customers and I think and to life in general .... you've only got to see the opportunities on their website for employment and the attitude they have in the search for excellence..just my opening 2p worth folks!!

As mentioned on the 993 recall thread, Lindbrook of Tonbridge are a very efficient and courteous OPC, but did offer the obligatory cup of coffee.

The specialist I use however is La Rose Porsche in Kemsing, just outside Sevenoaks. Been with them about 5 years firstly with my 964 Cab, and then with the 993 Cab, which Paul Devyea, who is based at the same location, found for me. Incidentally, I didnt go with a PPI (20 or so forum members put their heads in their hands at this point muttering "what a blooming fool!!" or similar  ), but given the association I've had with both, I didnt think I'd get stiffed. The Lindbrook service chap commented on what a 'well looked after car' I had compared to a lot of import dogs they see to sort out, so my trust is so far well founded- Time will tell I guess.

Chaps,

I use a guy called Chris Turner in Willesden, and he's proabably the best Porsche Dr. I have ever met. He provides a very efficient service and I think is quite reasonable too. I keep to the OPDs for the yearly service, but Chris is my man for anything else.

(ps it helps when he's your uncle's mate from the 70s)

My vote goes to Ray Northway, near Reading - he looked after my dear old mums series of 924's, 944's way in the 80's and 90's - top bloke, really knows his stuff and cannot bear to see people spend their money when they dont need to. I can't recommend him enough.

He even took time out to give me some buying advice, even when it was obvious that i was not going to buy a car from him. I believe he also does a side-line in ducati's - if your that way inclined !!

some great info here...

the irony is that service from stealers seems to get worse as you go up the car ranks !

I know VW owners who are shocked at the crap service my local Audi stealer (West London Audi) whereas Seat owners seem to be best catered for !

Anyone used AmD (up in Bicester) for their Porsche ????

Been there done that... in the last 13 years of Porsche ownership I have used the following.

Chapplegate Porsche (main stealership) in Ferndown, Dorset. Was never very pleased with them, but also never completely unhappy with them, although over the years they did cost me a fortune in mis diagnosed stuff, diagnosing something costing £2k+ when it turned out to be a £50 part that was really at fault happened several times! Plenty of free coffee, but I guess over the years that free coffee actually cost me about a grand per cup!

Ray Northway Porsche (independent) in reading. Knows his stuff, but unfortunately its rarely the honcho who touches your porsche and I didnt like how they left my car a few times (oily finger prints, things not 100% buttoned down.

Lancaster Porsche (main stealership) in Cambridge. Jeeeezus.. did they get me wild!!! hit a pot hole while visiting friends up there, was a bit nervous that I may have miss aligned something.. They put the car on their alignment lift, then rather than use the proper adjustment tools, they proceeded to use crow bars and eventually a ratchet strap and a scaffold pole to pull on a rear suspension arm!!! I asked if it was bent, if so I wanted a new one, they told me it was not bent, but its how they always do it!!!!! Needless to say, I could not get out of there quick enough!

JMAutos (independent) london. Very very very bad. Paid them to check my brake disks out while I was on holiday (they are not very far from Gatwick, so I dropped off the car there), when I came back they billed me for a complete brake overhaul (disks, pads, caliper rebuild) and billed me for about £2900.. fair enough, I asked them to do it, and didnt think it would be cheap... but on the way back to bournemouth (about 100 miles down the road) I realised that my brake pad wear warning light was on, kept going and called into Chapplegate back in Bournemouth, only for them to say the disks and pads had not been changed and they could see no sign of the calipers being touched!!!.. Tried trading standards (what a joke!), then some bull happened where apparently the owner had emigrated, even though the place is still trading with the same staff... Anyway, an expensive mistake.

Porschembri (independent) London. Used Patrick at Porschembri, while I was in London on Business, to double check some work Chapplegate had done for me.. he was honest, didnt charge to much, and seemed ok all round

Steve Bull (Independent) Somerset. Not a bad chap, seems ok, but does like to keep your credit card number in easy reach.. First thing he asks for is your credit card number, and while the car is with him, its getting a bit of a pasting every day! but still cheaper than a main stealer.. Just does not seem comitted or very interested.

JZMachatec (independent) London. All good, used them when they were RUF-UK.. Seemed much better as RUF, but still good.. Consider them the KwikFit of the Porsche world, cheap chearfull, but your just one of many customers to them, they forgot who you are the second you turned your back :)

Hartech (independent) london. Fantastic for gearbox rebuilds, so so for everything else.. Another kwikfit Porsche outfit..

Jon Mitchell (Independent) Bournemouth. Fantastic Fantastic Fantastic.. Too cheap at times, but dont tell him that!! Normally in the workshop from about 9am until anything up to 7 or 8pm! Even on saturdays!.. His workmanship is good, and have not put a foot wrong in 3 years.. After my disasters above, I had given up on finding ANYONE who I could trust.. Then I called the independent Porsche club, who recommended Jon, Chapplegate could not diagnose a problem on my car, even made out like I was imagining the 3 times it had broken down, Jon worked out the fault over the phone (DME Relay) and fitted a new one the same day (even only charged me for the relay and nothing for fitting). Its also always amazing to see what he has in the workshop.. One week it could be a 924, the next it could be a 959! I dont have his number to hand, but his website is at
www.9xx.co.uk

Chris Turner... Now thats a name I have not heard in a few years! is he still going?? He must be the ORIGINAL Porsche specialist... Is he still a one man band?

There is some place on the road to Salisbury from Bournemouth.. Something or other sportscars.. AVOID THEM, they know as much about Porsches as I know about sub atomic physics (nothing)

There is also a specialist in Poole in Dorset, he knows a little about Porsches, but is a hatchet merchant.. The business is call Quatro, Porsche VW and Audi specialists.. I think that says it all!

Strasse in Leeds are supposed to be excellent, but I have never used them.

I did find one OPC which was OK.. but cant for the life of me remember the name or the town, they are the one just to the north of the M25, I think just off of the A1 or A1M... I visited them on the way to Bedford Autodrome for a track day.. I needed a couple of odds and ends, and they could not have been more helpful, and not at all like the other OPC's I have been to, it was a busy saturday morning, and yet the parts guy was more than happy to talk to me to make sure I had the right parts, gave me a little advise on fitting them (only bits of trim, but still!) and even showed me around their ex-lemans car 915(?) and let me sit in it!!.. Damn fine bloke.

My advice would be to find a good specialist and treat him well, there are very few good ones out there.. even if I moved away, I would probably still use Jon Mitchell if I were within a couple of hundred miles!!! again, check out his site at
www.9xx.co.uk
for his contact details.

Paul

Bit concerned about the comments on Steve Bull who I presume is the one based in Devizes.

I was considering using him when my car is up for service at the end of the year, but reading this and having looked for his workshop over the summer, I have to say I now have doubts He has a very small workshop and there were far too many Porsches scattered haphazardly around the yard without organised parking. I would not like my car left on that estate overnight or alternatively taken off for a pasting round the Wiltshire lanes.

He did get a very good write up a couple of years ago on this forum, but has anyone else any more recent experience?

Jon Mitchell in Bournemouth is also working from a very small workshop, But not on a rough estate, its a old fashioned 1950's garage, but is kitted out with some very specialised equipment... Parking is on a small organised forcourt, and the only cars left outside overnight are ones left there by prior arangement (like when I need to collect or drop off one of mine late at night) His workshop is indeed very small with an office bellow the workshops.. But he is only a one man band, so its probably adequate for what he needs.

The same may be the case for Steve Bull.. I just didnt like the beating he gave my credit card... I know our cars are expensive toys, but the problem is when its not one big beating the card gets, but a constant trickle over the course of its visit.

Thanks Sundeep, I was trying to remember who they were.. I would say they are the only Porsche main dealer I have ever been 100% happy with.

Ciao

Paul
