Battery Conditioners

Has anyone tried or does anyone use a battery conditioner for their car? They're used a lot by bikers and sound ideal for my 993 as it'll soon be getting used very rarely with the onset of scottish winter.

I've had battery probs thru the winter before 'cos when you go out you've got everything on - lights, wipers etc. and it seems to be a big load to start the 993 too.

Any advice appreciated

Yep! I use my Optimate on my bike and 993 Works perfectly and keeps them both charged without damaging the battery. I alternate them every couple of weeks over the worst of the winter, if they've not been used.

They cost about £40

I use an AccuMate charger/conditioner that works very well. I bought it last year at the NEC Classic Car Show and paid about £45. I simply plug mine into into the cigarette lighter socket. Everyone that only uses their car occasionaly should have one.

The AccuMate is a good one.

I have the Porsche Charge-o-mat which works very well. It recharges the battery and then switches to top up charge to maintain it. Good but a bit pricey.

Didn't I read a post on this site recently that you can't use the cigarette lighter socket on a 993 to charge the battery unless it has been modified? I've just ordered a Porsche Charge-O-Mat and was told I need an adapter so I can attach it directly to the battery terminals.

Mine works fine in the cigarette lighter socket.

Just check that the lighter works when the keys are out. I'm unaware that mine has been modified.

I prefer this method as the car is locked and it also reminds me to disconnect.

Having recently bought a 993 C2S, I noticed on one of the old invoices from Swindon OPC a charge for converting the wiring to/from the cigarette lighter so it will accept a trickle charger.

Intend to use mine throughout the winter so shouldn't need to trickle charge it but this does lend some weight to the theory that the standard cigarette lighter is not suitable for a trickle charger.

Cheers guys, found a few on ebay around the £30 mark so i'll get one ordered up - seems to be a few which run from 240v so i'll go for that.

I bought a combined charger / conditioner from Halfords about 2 years ago for £29. It automatically switches to conditioning mode when the battery is charged. I have used it for the last two years and never had any battery problems.

I find connecting directly to the battery is easy (but the car is kept in a garage). I leave the bonnet cracked but push the locking pin down to turn the light off.

I too have a C2S and thought I may need to perform a similar modification before using my charge-o-mat, but it works fine. Although mine is a German LHD model.
