Battery Charging 1999 C4

Hi All,
Can anyone tell me how to charge the battery without the alarm sounding? As soon as I disconnect the battery the alarm nearly deafens me!
It's a 1999 C4.
I have moved house and the car was stood for a month alas the battery was nearly flat this morning!

Make sure the ignition is switched on before you disconnect and the alarm will not sound.
