So, I'm back in a Cayenne after a 3 year sabbatical! I had mentioned on Mark's Cayenne GTS progress thread last year that I was thinking of getting another one and I picked one up at the start of December after seeing a for sale post on a Cayenne Facebook group. I had been looking at 958 models with the 3.0 diesel engine but the continual posts I was seeing with issues with the transfer box was putting me off. There was also the issue that this car was primarily to be used as a dog wagon so paying £20k for that privilege seemed crazy given the potential damage a dog does to a car over time and I opted to go for another 955 at the lower price point of the market.

Initially I was looking for a 4.5 S model but given what I was using the car for and the fact I have a fairly quick other daily (Golf R) I decided to keep an open mind and see what came up. With my first Cayenne I was looking for a black exterior and black interior but never got that so this became something I was keen to get for my second one. An ad came up on the FB group and I contacted the seller and made arrangements to go and see it, only for him to call me as I was travelling there and cancel, deciding he was going to keep it. A week later he got back in touch and said he was definitely going to sell so did I want to come and see it. I was apprehensive as I was concerned he'd pull out again but I went to see it and it checked out ok.

It is a decent spec and has the 20" Sport Design alloys, heated front seats, heated steering wheel, cruise control, etc. My last 955 had none of these. He had it dechromed which isn't the greatest when close up but looks okay from a distance. Someone has done it by wrapping it and the job around the windows is brutal at the tricky corners! It's in decent condition externally but does need a good detail with a polisher as some sections of paint are heavily swirled and a bit flat looking. It also has some laquer peel to the front bumper which I might or might not get resprayed. The interior is in really good condition and the leather looks like new but then it only has 93k miles on the clock.

Couple of negatives with the buying experience which to be honest are really my fault, but I was trying to not be as pedantic as I usually would be when buying a 17 year old car. The seller said it had lots of service history but no stamped service book so I kept an open mind on this thinking recent history was more important than the tyres being changed 14 years ago. He had a little service information and receipts for work done over the last 3 to 4 years but showed me digital emailed receipts he had for some major work done, including the differentials having their oil changed and also the transfer box oils done. He said he would email me all these but he still hasn't despite me chasing him several times. Luckily I remembered one of the garages names that was at the top of the email so contacted them and they emailed me all the receipts for the work they had done to it. From the condition of the car and how it drove was what sold it to me. You can tell it's been looked after generally.

The other bigger issue is a vibration noise coming from the car when you get to 70mph. Totally my fault but on the test drive I didn't get the car above 65mph due to the areas we were driving in. It sounds like a wheel balancing or wheel bearing noise but when you lift off the accelerator it stops. It also stops if you knock it into neutral. It only occurs between around 65 to 75mph. You can also feel a slight vibration on the arm rest. I put the car into a local Porsche specialist and they thought initially that it was a rear wheel bearing but then that it might be the wheels needing balanced so checked all those and all were out (wheel bearings were fine). They rebalanced them and said they thought the car was driving much more smoothly but it's still doing it. They told me to contact them if it wasn't better but I feel a bit shortchanged by them to be honest. I've put a call back into them to chat about next steps but they have never called me back. This was about 4 weeks ago. Last week I put 2 new rear tyres on it as I noticed one had a nail in the sidewall but the noise is still there. One thing the garage did mention is that the underside of the car has been completely undersealed (there is a receipt from a 'specialist' for £800 for this work) and the muppets have also coated half the carden shaft, the side that must have been exposed when they had it up on the ramp to do the work. They said it's balanced so couldn't be sure but said this could possibly be unbalancing it and that might be the issue. Again, I've been in touch with the seller to ask him if this vibration was pre or post undersealing but he hasn't responded. I don't really want to be replacing random components to attempt to fix the issue.

In the 4 months I've had it not much has been done and generally it drives great. Feels a lot quicker and sharper than my previous Cayenne which was the same model and engine. I had fitted a set of aluminium pedals from an S and also added a rear cubby panel below the air vents to the rear (it had the blanking panel fitted). The biggest thing I did was fit the twin exhaust pipes to it which have made the exhaust note much nicer. I seen them advertised locally for £100 so decided since I was going to remove the back bumper to try and fix the faulty parking sensors I would chuck these on at the same time. Picked up the exhausts and then realised that the standard rear bumper valance doesn't have cut outs wide enough to accommodate them! By luck I then found someone selling a black bumper in the same colour as my car that had the Turbo valance. I ended up keeping my upper bumper cover as it was in better condition but swapped out the valances. The only downside is the one I bought came from a car with LPG so has the filler cap fitted. It does the job for now until I find a better valance! I also fitted the roof rails found in a local breakers yard for much cheapness.
Other thing needing resolved are that both front and rear parking sensors don't work and a scan at the specialist advises none of the sensors are working. They thought it might be the module in the boot so I replaced that with a known working item but still the same. In the meantime I have bought 12 brand new sensors and am going to replace them all, but will check the wiring looms when I have the bumpers off in case there is a breakage somewhere. I also have the usual problem of it needing new boot struts so have a set of 4 new Stabilus ones lying in the garage ready to go on, but haven't had time to do it yet. Easter hols are going to be busy......

Yeah, I think the early 955s look great in black especially when dechromed. Makes them look a touch more modern. I feel a bit bad I use mine mainly for slinging the dog in given it's good condition, but needs must.

What kind of Cayenne do you have?

Not much has happened on the car the last while with the exception of getting a pair of rear tyres. I noticed that there was a large screw sticking out the sidewall of the OSR one so knew it wouldn't be repairable. The tyres on the car were cheap Chinese Autogreen items so no bad thing to change them out. I'll get the front done soon too so they are all matching. I just do local journeys with the car ferrying the dog around to various walks so not too fussed for the best of items. I was looking at Goodyear F1s as they had some good pricing but after a chat with my local tyre place I opted for Nexens. Never used them before but he said they were standard fitment on some newer Cayennes and Macans so I took a look. They are A rated in the wet and come with a lifetime guarantee so shall see how they perform over the next few months. If they are rotten I'll fit better ones on the front then change the rears out for the same!

On my previous Cayenne I had replaced the PCM unit with a new Kenwood one as I wanted Android Auto, Carplay, etc and to play Spotify. It was a bit of a faff and I remember vowing never again, but times a healer so when I seen a second hand unit come up for sale locally at a good price I decided to go through the pain again. It's an Erisin item, the one that looks like the OEM item fitted to the later 957s so meant a direct fit with no faffing around installing new fascia plates and it looks better in the aperture.

The chap I bought it from had Bose and I noticed there had been some fudging done with the wiring to get it connected to the MOST adaptor. My car doesn't have Bose so I disconnected the MOST and plugged it in to see if it would work in its current state. To my surprise it, did but I decided to rationalise it and disconnect some the wires that had been spliced to connect the MOST and the analogue connectors for left and right. This turned out to be not such a good idea as for some reason it disconnected the steering wheel control function despite the CAN BUS still being connected. I tried a few things with the wires and eventually got it working again. No clue what I did but it worked!

The unit didn't come with a mic for the hands free nor a GPS aerial. I wasn't too worried about trying to use the sat nav as I prefer Google maps but decided since I was going to have to do some dismantling with the dash to fit the mic that I might as well install one to future proof, so picked one up from Ebay. During this thought process I decided to add a DAB aerial too as the quality of the FM from the radio is shocking. Not sure if it's an ariel issue or just a rubbish tuner in the head unit itself. I have noticed that it is worse once you install the head unit into the aperture and bury the aerial adaptor down the back. I just used the aerial adaptor that came with the head unit which has a double Fakra connection that plugs into the two Fakras coming from the car. Not sure why there is two of these and interested to know if anyone here has more details on that. I just need to download and install an app for the DAB to get it set up on the head unit. To install these items I had to remove the centre speaker cover on the dash and also the cowel over the speedo. All relatively easy using a good guide I found online a few years back from an installer based in the States. They had some good tips on how to remove trim and also how to fish cables through, which is probably the biggest challenge with any install. Extra-long zip ties are your friend here. I decided to mount the GPS aerial under the centre speak cover on top of the dash and the DAB tuner under the dashpod. Luckily the DAB ariel is just long enough to route up the A pillar then along the front of the windscreen where it meets the roof liner. I did initially want to take the DAB across the back of the dash under the glove box but struggled to find a way out to the left hand side of the aperture where the head unit sits. I've ran the aerial out from the dashpod, up the A pillar then along the front edge of the roof lining. It's frustrating that it can't just sit to the drivers side of the windscreen as that would have been a much simpler task.

I need to just get everything finally tested now before fitting all the interior back. I also need to remove the centre console top and route the three USB cables past the gear selector and up into the lower central armrest so you can connect your phones for Android, Carpaly, etc and charge them. Thought about going into the glovebox but that doesn't look easy and the central part of the car more accessible when you're driving. Will post more details and pics up when this is done.

I have a 2013 958

Managed to complete the install of the head unit last week and all seems to be working fine. DAB works, bluetooth calling works, sat nav works. I ran two USB cables for connecting phones along the underside of the transmission tunnel then up into the lower cubby hole storage at the centre console. Looks quite neat even if I do say so myself and not that much hassle to do.

The unit is very easy to use and I have to say the sound quality is impressive for a cheap unit. The unit already had the DAB+ app and a sat nav app downloaded to it so I've just been using them. Next step for me is to work out how to download apps to it as I think I need to do this to access Android Auto. So far I've just been using the nav on the head unit for directions and playing my Spotify through the Bluetooth music function, but ideally I'd like to get Android Auto up and running on it. I'm sure all you have to do is get the unit connected to the internet so you can access Playstore and download your chosen app. I will figure it out in the near future once I have some time.

Did a few more jobs a couple of days ago to the car trying to fix things that aren't working. First one was inoperative parking sensors. Neither the fronts nor rears have worked since I bought the car. I'm not too fussed about them to be honest but it's bugging me now and my wife drives the car too and would prefer having them than not. The previous owner had also given me 2 new headlight washers when I bought the car as he said the current ones were leaking fluid. He had pulled the fuse to fix the issue but I thought since they were there and I was taking the bumper off anyway I'd just get them swapped over.

Headlight washers were easy if a little fiddly getting the covers back on them once installed in the bumper. Hose connections just pop off and washers themselves are held on with a retaining bracket at the base and then 3 tiny torx headed screws at the top.

For the sensors I had bought all new ones and decided to just replace them all as the error codes were telling me they were all faulty. I already tried changing the parking control module in the boot but that never worked. I ended up buying the copy ones for a tenner each from ebay after I seen a few others post links for them on forums. I found genuine ones on the Design911 site but no way was I paying £185 each for a Bosch sensor. Luckily my car is black and the sensors are black so you don't notice them being unpainted. They look very similar to the Bosch ones but on thing I did notice is that the tab on them that locks them to the connector on the loom isn't as big as the ones on the originals so you really need to press them into the connector to get it to lock into place. This is not very easy without some brute strength!

Anyway, after all that hassle the parking sensors still don't work! I have 4 to change on the rears too which I was going to tackle today but the car has knocked the life out of of me a bit.

A further blow is that the new headlight washers don't work either! I reinstated the fuse for them that the prev owner had pulled and you can hear a secondary pump running once you pull the windscreen washers but but no fluid appearing. They aren't leaking which is a bonus but frustrating they don't work still.

Anyone with any suggestions on either of these two problems please feel free to comment!

My headlight washers have a leak in cold weather on the offside front. I changed the top O-Ring and have bought the lower joint to the hose where it leaks, but on a Turbo it's a bumper off job and I'm struggling to find the motivation at the moment. Having spent a lot of time removing and reinstalling the gearbox in my 996, plus other jobs, I just want to drive the cars now.

One thing though, is that I'm pretty sure the headlight washers only come on once every 5 or 6 windscreen wash presses. I don't think they come on each time you pull the windscreen wash lever. Could it just be you've not tried enough? The common problem is a drip in cold weather, so not sure pulling the fuse would cure it, as it syphons downhill, pumped or not.

To be honest taking the bumper off wasn't too difficult. I used the how to guide on Pelican Parts website. The hardest part is getting it back on if you are on your own as you need to line up the slot on clips either side below the front of the wing. I did the passenger side first then the drivers and that worked fairly easily. I also found I had to have the bumper fully on before I could reconnect the loom and the water tube. The water tube in particular is short/tight. Start to finish I was 2 hours total to remove the bumper, remove and refit the headlight washers and remove and refit the 6 sensors. I am no mechanical expert so I'd say if you are any way competent with the spanners you'd be worse case the same time as me.

When I inserted the fuse I was getting a drip from the passenger side one too. When fuse pulled it stopped. Worse in the winter as you say which must be the o-ring seal contracting.

Thanks for the heads up on them coming on. It might well be they are working! No drips anyway so changing them has worked on that front at least.

With warmer weather coming and the car being a dog wagon day-to-day, I was driving around with the windows open to get some air flowing for the hound. The buffering noise was driving me nuts and I wondered if the plastic deflectors they fit to car windows was to stop that. I asked a couple of friends who have them fitted and they said yes. I know some folks seem to fit them as a fashion accessory to cars but I think they look awful!

Anyway, practicality needs must so I bit the bullet and ordered a set of Team Heko ones off ebay. They were a bit fiddly to fit but got them done in the end. Rears were a breeze, fronts not so easy - I had an issue with them fouling the window to the rear where it meets the B-pillar.

After all that I can't say I notice any real difference apart form when the window is down low enough that it doesn't pass the bottom of the deflector. Open the window more and it buffers like mad. Oh well.

Not had to do much to the car of late. I started to use a body detox shampoo on it as I want to give it a machine polish to cure some of the flat paintwork on it. Generally the car looks good but both rear wings look a bit flat. I did a test area on one and it came up well so now just need to find some time to get stuck in as it takes a while to do properly.
One thing I did resolve was the non-working parking sensors which I am absolutely delighted about. As I said in an earlier post I changed the module t no avail and then changed all 6 front sensors. I still had 4 sensors to the rear bumper to change so decided to do a bit of testing first to try and figure out how it is wired up. I disconnected the front loom to the sensors and still the same results although interestingly when I did a scan using my Por V2 it only gave me the 1 error message for no power to the module, not the subsequent 12 fault codes for each individual sensor when I scanned them while both were connected. I reconnected the fronts and disconnected the rears then tried it again. Fronts worked this time – success, I knew the module was likely working properly. When running a test again it logged no faults which I thought strange as I had unplugged the rears. Maybe because it couldn't detect the voltage draw it didn't recognize the loom? Anyway, removed the rear bumper and swapped out the 4 old sensors to the centre with the new ones. Connected the loom and both front and rears working. I'd read on a few other forums about people just swapping out the 12 sensors for new and it fixing the problem but the garage probably gave me the additional work (and expense) by incorrectly diagnosing the module as the issue. Given how easy it is to take the bumpers off I should have just done that months ago. Lesson learned!

Bit of a quiet couple of months on the Cayenne but I do have a few things to tend to.

After my success with the parking sensors I started getting a red light from the front nearside when slowing down and the sensors were activating so ran the scanner and it came up with a fault code for one of the new sensors I'd installed. I gave a clean best I could and maybe thought a bit of dirt was on it but nope, same thing and fault code kept coming back when cleared. Cue me having to take the front bumper off the night before we set off on holiday to change the sensor for a known good one I had spare. That resolved it but when putting it all back together again the adjuster that you lock the headlight in with broke. Luckily it locked it before it broke so the headlight is secure but I will need to buy a replacement headlight tray and get that fitted. Also need to figure out how to get the headlight out when locked in place but the device broken to slide it out. if anyone knows please share! Thanks.

The car performed well on our holidays doing 700 miles or so in a week. The 23mpg wasn't so great however. I had the roof box on which won't have helped mind you. The roof box looks massive on my other car (a Golf mk 7) but is hilariously tiny on the Cayenne as you will see in the pics.

On the way home I had the PSM and ABS light come on and a diag on it is throwing up a couple of fault codes which seem to be related to the rear left wheel speed sensor. The car is going into the garage next week so I'll let them take a look at it instead of me. They are investigating the noise I still have that manifests at around 65mph, take a look to see where the exhaust blow is and advise on how to fix (an MOT advisory last year) and also look at re-securing the engine undertray at the rear where it is hanging down. I tried to resolve myself but cannot get it back in and think maybe a section of the bracket is missing. Tie wraps have done the job in the meantime but it's a short-term bodge not a long-term fix.

Will update next week once I get it back.

Blimey it's slow on here - no posts whatsoever in this lounge since my last one nearly 5 weeks ago!

Well I (the garage), fixed the issue with a new ABS speed sensor to the NSR wheel. Probably should have done it myself as they charged me £77 alone for the part. They advised the front flexi pipe below the 2 cats would need to be replaced but suggested an exhaust specialist would need to do it so off to a local one I went for a quote. They have quote around £600 all in to do this. Cheaper than buying new cats I guess and then the added expense of removing the old ones and rebuilding it all back up again. I'm hopeful it will pass the MOT will an advisory for this again and then I can get it repaired at my leisure as it's a sore one for effectively labour. Garage reckoned it would take them a day in time as they thought the propshaft would need to be removed to the front to gain access along with something at the gearbox.

I still have to fit a new NSF headlight tray and the 4 boot struts. On the list for this weekend.,,,,
