Well just back from a week in France with my wife and 5 year old accompanying! 1800 miles and £550 ish pound of fuel and the old girl didn't miss a beat! The journey reminded me of exactly why I bought this car some 10 years ago as it is a total pleasure to drive and never lets me down! Glad I had a re- gas before I left though as it was bloody boiling!

And some people say 993 air con is not worth having

I wonder how many of them have no air con or its not working lol

I can't wait until my daughter is out of car seats and we can use the 993 for family outings :thumb:

my annual milage dropped significantly until I found a decent child seat that fitted, however now shes 5 shes in a Monza seat which fits like a glove! Glad we stuck with it as she loves been out in it as she gets a perfect view, compared to modern cars which have such high doors, blocking visibility for little ones! Air-con worked a treat just have to make sure you use it as often as possible to stop hoses drying and gas leaking!

Hi,

When I drove from the UK to Spain in 2010 the car performed just perfectly. Considering the longest journey it ever did in Q8 was no more than 60 / 70 Kms round trip I was a little concerned, but as it turned out no need to worry whatsoever. Two days, 1800 Km and the car never missed a beat, AC after 12 midday and it worked a treat, mind you it had had good use in Q8 with summer temperatures hitting 50C+. I even used the cruise control set at 140 Kmph and it just ate up the journey. Only stopped for fuel, what a drive ..... must do it again, these cars were built for this!

ATB :)

I drove my 997 down the the South of france last year with one stop along the way. I absolutely loved it!!

Doing it in the 993 in a couple of weeks.

Have any of you driven from Calais to Nice in one go? How long did it take? I'm getting the Eurotunnel at 0610.

I've done it countless times in both directions!

I rarely do it on the way there these days but still I always do it on the way home, much to my wife's annoyance.

I probably used to do it a bit quicker but I am now obliged / told to stop occasionally en route!

It's basically a full days driving.

If I leave Nice at about the time you are getting the tunnel to go over there, I would hope to be at the tunnel by about 6:30 - 7:00pm or maybe a little earlier with a good run.

If I remember correctly, it's not far short of 800 miles, but you can have days where you don't touch the brakes for hours unless you are approaching a toll booth.

Have a great trip.

Yes I have done it quite a few times in one day. Toes in the Med at 0630 home in bed in Essex by midnight. Not in a Porsche though, I did not have one in those days, but in a lotus S2 and then a Lotus 2 plus 2. There were no speed cameras in those days, I am talking late seventies mid eighties so no tunnel only ferries.

I'm really looking forward to doing it. Girlfriend is catching a flight at 1530ish from Heathrow. I hope I get to the St Paul De Vence before she does (childish, I know). We have dinner plans at 7pm! :thumb:

Marvellous!

It sounds more entertaining than the contrived challenges they have on Top Gear these days!

Your girlfriend won't land until after 6pm French time and the taxi to St Paul De Vence will take her about 30 minutes so you have got a good chance.

Have you rented a villa or are you staying at the Colombe D'Or? :thumb:

It will be a close call I think. I'm off to visit my girlfriends parents, they fortunate enough to live in such a picturesque place. Will be heading down to the Colombe D'Or, they live about 10 minutes away. That is such a fantastic restaurant. When did you head down last?

I think it was about three years ago!

Far too long!

It's not necessarily that the food is the most spectacular, although it is lovely; its more the terrace. the location and the art on the walls as you go to the toilet!

There can't be many restaurants where artists like Matisse and Picasso paid for their restaurant bills with paintings.

The Calder Mobile by the swimming pool is absolutely wonderful.

I love the whole area and usually stay in Tourrettes-Sur-Loup. I nearly bought a small house there about 10 years ago before the Russians moved in!! I couldn't afford a wheelie bin there now!

Oh well, "lets not mourn the passing of missed opportunities"; as a colleague of mine once said to a particularly horrible Judge when he announced that he was late because he had nearly been run over that morning!

Have a wonderful time and take a few photographs, especially of your Porsche just outside that cafe on the entrance to St Paul!! The one by the boule pit!

My wife has very strict instructions to take my ashes in a thermos flask to the boule pit in Tourrettes. I'll rest very happily there! :thumb:
