Auto Gearbox oil and quantity ATF...

Hello,
That ATF that you specified there from Opie is the stuff you need. It needs to be Dexron 2 or equivalent.
As you say the system holds around 9.5 - 10 litres in total but because the pipes run uphill to the ATF cooler it traps a fair amount in the cooling rad. If you drain off the ATF via the plug in the bottom of the box you will get around 3.5 litres out.
The way I did mine was to drain the ATF out, measure the quantity and then put back the same amount to get the level about right. I then just topped it up to get it perfect when the car was hot.
Some people go through this procedure three or four times (driving a hundred miles or so between each change) and on the last drain take off the sump and replace the filter. This way you get most of the old fluid out.
If you want to change the entire amount of fluid in one go you have to disconnect one of the pipes going to the rad from the side of the box and connect an adapter to a fluid pump and them flush it through.
Hope this helps.

Hi Steve and thanks for your reply.

so are you saying that for a 'standard' oil change I would only change 3.5L of the 9.5L? It hardly seems worth it? When you did yours did you only put back in 3.5L??

I dont want to buy 10L to find i only use 3-4L??

Cheers,
Lig.

If you just drain the box and change the filter, yes it will only need around 3.5 to 4 litres. That's why some people do the drain and refill cycle four or five times to make sure all the ATF is changed.
To change all the ATF in one go requires disconnecting the ATF cooler and using a pressure pump to push out the old ATF. This will take 9-10 litres.
It's no problem draining off the old ATF, but it can be a bit messy re-filling. You can adapt a garden sprayer to make it easier but I used a proper oil hand pump that I already had to hand.
It should be part of the regular service routine to change the ATF and filter. I think it's once every 24K IIRC. If you car has been regularly serviced it shouldn't need doing.
I found the most time consuming part was getting the car up level on four axle stands to get underneath it. It's the kind of job that takes 15 mins if you have a lift! which unfortunately I don't...........
I do have a couple of write-ups about this but I'm not in the UK at the moment...

Yes that's the guide I followed. I have the original saved with the pictures somewhere at home or work.
I made things simple for my self by just re-filling with the same amount as I drained out. Once the car was hot, I then just topped it up a bit to the correct mark on the guage.

Hi

I used a bicycle pump to pressurise the lines to the front cooler and force the fluid out while my gearbox was out. You could do it in situ pretty easily I think.

You can use any excess fluid to change or top up the power steering fluid.
