Well guys, not sure if any of you remember but after I saw the AMV8 in the flesh I promised myself I would try it out and if it convinced me I would buy it! Meanwhile, I got a 997 (perfection on wheels) and waited eagerly for the test drive of the AMV8.

Well, it happened and to be honest I was a bit dissappointed. Don't get me wrong, I liked a lot about it but it still doesn't come anywhere near my Porsche. In fact, my 2003 996 was a better car!

The thing looks awesome! The body, is nice and low and plenty wide, it looks mean! The interior is OK but ergonomics are obviously not Aston's priority. The key doesn't fit into the ignition without a fight, there is hardly any leg room, the foot rest is useless and the rear view mirrors can hardly be adjusted. The ideal seating position should be very low down since the windscreen is so low but unless you have a long torso you can't see squat! I am not that tall 5 foot 9 and wear size 8 shoes but couldn't get comfortable! I could get used to it but I don't think I want to for GBP 80,000!

The sound of the car was amazing, the engine is lovely, its plenty fast and hold the road amazingly, the steering, gear change are all very positive and reassuring, plenty of feedback from the wheels but still lacks in places where the 997 excels.

In all honesty, if you were to sit in the car without knowing the badge, the price, the looks and just mark it on the driving position you wouldn't like it too much. Because of what it is you get excited and forget the annoying things. The car I drove was brand new but had a few computer faults already!!!

On a side note, you have to be a man's man to drive it, the clutch is heavy the gear change needs a serious push and the brakes have to be stamped on to be engaged!

A couple of weeks ago, my local Aston dealer leant me a DB9 one afternoon : ) Had a great time thrashing it around, my friend happened to have his video camera and we taped the whole affair but I personally was not too impressed. The 997 Carrera is the car!! BUT, the Aston dealer is lending me the car for a full day when I get back from my winter holidays!

For my money, the Porsche is all you need. BUT, I did have a Gallardo for a while a few weeks ago - very very nice :)

Interesting comments...

The 911 is all the car anyone would need, but it is fun to try the competition!

An acquaintance (ex 993 turbo, C4S) has just bought a Gallardo and is thrilled with it.

Funny though, the Aston is a real pin-up dream car. I have a model of one on my desk at the office to inspire me!

I have always wanted an Aston myself, I sat in a DB7 a couple of years ago and didn't really like it too much....Oh well, could be worse, could be no Porsche!

Have always wanted an Aston too, Not so much a fan of the DB7, but the DB9 and AMV8 are so nice to look at.

Problem is, I use my Porsche every day, 15000 to 18000 miles a year, until Aston can live up to that, they will never be anything more than a luxury.

Look forward to being able to afford one in 10 years!

funnily enough the one with the engine in the wrong place and lowest power seemed to be the fastest in the real world 8)

In the last few months I have been asked the question "So what car next Dave?" The Aston was an idea but I can't see myself moving away from Porsche for quite a long time. For an everyday drive you can't beat it. I guess when senility and old age creep in a Bentley GT may work. Until then...........Happy Motoring!

Good comment Chris, I wanted jump in the Aston everyday like I do with my Porsche. I think that it would make a good second car. Speaking of which, I might get a Cayenne.......a little bird tells me they are upping the 3.2 V6 to 3.4 and giving it a bit more of a BHP boost - should now be driveable!
