I was just reading another thread regarding potential purchase of a 996 where someone suggested replacing the suspension arms. I have just had a little look here:
http://www.design911.co.uk/fu/pt171...5/996-C2-3-4L-1997-08-01/Suspension-and-Axle/
My car seems to be perfect in the handing department, but nice shiny new arms can't really do any harm. Which ones from the link above are the most likely to be needing replacement? Is it a case of just replacing the lot or would this just simply be overkill?

I'm doing mine this weekend.

Just waiting on the coffin arms to arrive. Will be swapping the tuning forks, coffin arms and track rod ends.

Bought the Tuning forks and track rod ends off ebay, tuning forks are TRW and were about £75 for the pair and the track rod ends were £60 for the pair.

Coffin arms are coming from Mister-auto.co.uk at £130 for the pair, again TRW parts.

If there's nothing wrong with your suspension it may seem a little pointless spending the money but changing them wont hurt anything.

I'm doing mine as the passenger side coffin arm has play in it so does the track rod end. Just makes sense to do both sides.

Many thanks for your detailed response Craig. You mention 'coffin arm play', was this noticeable when driving or from when under the car? If from under the car, is this something you can pick up by just wiggling with hand pressure or with masses of force exerted on it (lever or one of those hydraulic steering check devices)?
Also if replacing, do you think a full geo check will be required? I have just had mine checked and paying another €300 for this only 200miles later seems a little unfortunate.

Jack up the car and grab the wheel at the top and bottom and try to rock it. If the ball joint in the coffin arm is worn you should be able to feel play.

If your just doing the bottom arms you would get away without Geo check, I'm doing steering parts also so I will be getting mine checked and the tracking done.

All parts are here now so will be doing it tomorrow.

Don't forget your top mounts too! mine were shot after 113k miles. I bought the cheaper ones from design 911 and a stud sheared off! had to drill it out and replace with a bolt as I needed the car.

Might be worthwhile replacing track rod ends too if you are doing the lot.

Rear suspension is the same coffin arm and forked components, instead of track rod ends at the back you have track arms (TRW £43 from mister auto). At the back the upper links can't be found anywhere but porsche and at nearly a ton each are pricey when compared to the other arms.

I had a 4 hour fight with the rear eccentric bolt on a rear track arm so be prepared to replace those too (£18 from porsche).

Ive just yesterday completed a Full suspension refresh.

I found my car wasn't stable at higher speeds and after getting underneath with a bar and having a little wiggle, most seemed fine. Turned out to be the front top suspension mounts. So while i replaced those (£350 from Porsche!!) before i went and had the alignment sorted i thought "Balls to it" and ordered every arm for the car, front and rear.

Used TRW on the tuning fork arms, drop links, front track rod end, rear control arms, and replaced all 4 Coffin arms with Meyle.

When i removed i found most to be in acceptable condition for MOT purposes but the bushes did look a little tired in places.

Suffice to say the wheels not point in all sorts of directions (I removed every bolt, cleaned and greased to help keep adjustment free and easy) so off to have the car set up monday.

No mate I'm going to polybush those arms but at a later date, i wanted to replace anything with a ball joint and which was constantly under load. Those upper arms (I may be wrong) dont look like anything that could seriously have an adverse effect on the handling of the car.

I replaced:
x4 coffin arms
x4 tuning fork arms
x4 drop links
Rear Anti roll bar bushes (powerflex)
x2 Rear control arms
x2 Front top suspension mounts
x2 Front track rod ends

Its just having the Geo done today so hopefully when it returns it will be as tight as it was when new :thumb:
