Dear all,

Toying with the idea of either a 92/93 Turbo OR 993 C2 - both LHD and can be had for about 24K (?)

Is the turbo a little OTT as a daily driver? Would the 993 be a safer bet?

Any advice welcomed.

Hi Porker,

You are having the same problem as me. I currently run a 3.2 Carrera, and am struck by the thought of a Turbo. My understanding is that the 964 Turbo is much more usable than a 930, you cannot really tell the difference in daily use between a 3.3 and 3.6 Turbo 2. When I get one it will be in use daily running costs might be a bit up so I shall look for a decent warranty. £24k should just about get you into a 3.3 Turbo 2 RHD argue a bit. What do you currently run ?

For a daily driver I would go for a 993, although I think £24k is pretty much the bottom of the price bracket and you want to be very careful with your purchase (PPI etc). Turbos fo have higher running costs - it is inevitable - and I think you would find a 993 a better daily drive (comfort etc). At the end of the day though you just need to drive them both and see which you prefer. I bet turning away from a Turbo after youhave driven it will be difficult though!

Personally, if I had £25k to spend on a 911 daily driver I would find a 964 in great condition for £20k and keep the next £5k for fixes/upgrades - you know you'll have no trouble spending it!

Cheers, James

Bob, I'm totally Porscheless at the moment, so new to the marque. Running a totally dull co car, which I intend getting rid of and taking the cash instead.

James, RSJ seem to have a number of 993s for about 24K, even if they have around 55K on the clock, surely they're going to be more reliable than an older 964? Better engine etc.?

Hi Porker

Who are RSJ?

If you can find a perfect 993 for £24 then I would take it over an equally perfect 964, but for the same money you are likely to find an odler car in better condition than a newer car, and to me I would rather have a perfect 964 (with all the necessary fixes and upgrades done) than a "nice" 993. 993's have their own problems so I wouldn't assume that a 993 is necessarily more reliable than a 964.

The chances are whatever car you buy, not matter how perfect is seems, will want £2k spending on it in the first year. I would rather have this money put aside ready for spending on a £20k 964 than spend it all on a 993 on the assumption that it will be more reliable.

NB. The 964s get a really bad press, but once the known faults are put right they are a great car. As Bob suggests, have a look at
www.porsche964.co.uk
. It has a wealth of info on 964s.

Cheers, James
