Anybody use Pirelli tyres?

I need 4 new tyres on my 03 996 C2 Cab and I have been quoted £674+ VAT to have Michelins or £590+ VAT to have Pirelli's (N rated of course!).

Has any body got any experience of Pirelli tyres?

It is worth bearing in mind that whilst I drive fast I don't ever track the car, so I'm not looking for that last ounce of grip.

I use P-zero, they have v.good grip on dry, sharp handling compared to SO2 I had between time. They do hace softer rubber so will not last as long. Wet grip is not brillient aparently but I tend not to push it in the wet anyway so I can't comment. Some have mentioned about iffy quality control but I'm on my third set now and have had no problem, did 4 track days and 6000 miles on the current set last yr, still got plenty of threads left (>1/2).

i would take the Michelin, but thats down to my tramlining / 18's issue - probably not an issue on a 996 running 18's?

I do admit to having a slight bias against most Italian products - except my missus of course. :)

tyres i use S02 bridstone but they dont last very long 2500 to 3000 miles on the rear

would also eat pizza and pasta anyday than frankfurte sausage

either are fine...

I could rant on about dry grip, wet grip, wear, aqua planning, weight, tyre noise, rolling resistance, rim protections and looks

in the end either of those N rated Michelin or Pirelli tyres are a fine choice, they will last well with a great level of grip (subject to the laws of physics & your mighty right foot)

in the end one set is a few £'s short of £100 cheaper.. I think it's a no brainer !

I have sport contact 2s on my 993 and the rear ones are getting a bit worn so need replacing soon.




I have not had any other tyres on the car so can’t make any direct comparisons but so far the Conti’s have not been an issue.
Grip seems fine although you can always lose the back end if you really want to.

I am happy with my ContiSportContact2 N2's and have just put a second set on the rear.

Used Elite in Rainham Essex (just of A13) for 285/30/18's and came out at £200 per tyre fitted and balanced etc... which was/is a good price.

As I'm sure you know it's not good to mix brands so suggest you match your rears with the fronts and then if you do want to change brand then do the whole set next time round.

Yes I know about not mixing tyres, which is why I really need to pay attention to this thread and decide whether to replace the rear Conti’s or all 4 for something else.




Sundeep – Not a fan of Cont’s in the wet.
That’s a consideration as it’s wet in this country as often as it’s dry.




It would be interesting if anyone has had experience of Cont’s and P zeros (or anything else) on the same car in the past?




I was very impressed with the tyres in a heart stopping incident on a very wet motorway recently.
Travelling down the outside lane of a busy motorway, a van in front of me suddenly darted into the middle lane when the car in front of him stopped dead.
I had to do an emergency stop, I got that very loose back end feeling (not just the car!) I really thought it was game over, but the car seemed to dig into the road and stopped brilliantly.
By this time the guy behind me was skidding down the road about an inch from my bumper and I had to ease off the brakes to give him some room so that he didn’t smash into the back of me.
Conti’s were fine but I wouldn’t like to try that one again.

before I get sued by Conti..

nothing wrong with them... a great german autobahn tyre.....

I don't think it suits the uk roads... I was never able to push as hard as I would like.....

soon to switch to Michelin, although would prefer Goodyear F1 (best wet tyre around) but the yank tyre never bothered getting the N rated status from this german car manufacturer !

Had Conti on my car when I bought it, used it for nearly a yr before needing to replace it. Didn't know how "bad" it was untill I changed to P-zero. On dry at least, the P-zero felt sharper with better steering response and much more grip. SO2 felt somewhere in between.

Be carefull of Pirelli p zero Assimetricos,

when the get half worn they start to drone, you start to think you've got a wheel bearing problem or a stone stuck in the callipers

Cheers Mark. Does it happen to all of them or is it because of defects on the tyres? I must say for the past 3 sets I didn't notice anything unusual. I did read someone mentioning something about Pirelli's quality control problem though.
