Alternator Drive Belts

My 993 has become a zombie, but instead of eating brains, its eating alternator drive belts, yesterdays failure was the 3rd in 10 months. (and under 3k miles )

I know there's a fancy belt tension testing tool (which I don't have ). Is there a rule of thumb for estimating the tension like on normal cars :D like just being able to turn in 90 deg at its mid point etc ?

I don't have aircon ( hurrah ! ) and am using Porsche branded DAYCO belts from Design 911 PN 999.192.343.50

The alternator spins freely

Any pointers appreciated.

Yes there is a proper tool, but your best bet is to order a belt tensioner tool from gates, I'll post up the part number when I find it.
Its explained in the Manual how to correctly tension the belt and use the tool.
Are you sure you are using the correct belt, on mine the part number listed was wrong and the belt snapped till I fitted the next size up

That may be the problem, I think I'm propogating the error the previous owner made ( x 3 ! )
It seems the fitted belt is for a tip and 6mm too short
Thats weird as it doesnt seem overly tight when on.
Anyway many thanks to Karl at Design911 who helped me out with info this afternoon

Fingers crossed
