I recently tried a tip from a friend

Rather than use expensive wheel cleaner use Mr Muscle kitchen cleaner!!!!!

I tried this and it certainly works

Spending £1.20 rather than £5.00 suits me!!

Does anyone no of any down sides to using this

Seems too good to be true!!!!

..bye bye laquer, plus it'll probably disolve the clear coat if it gets near any paint.

It works well on my go kart body work, but wouldn't risk on the Porsche.

I'd worry about the laquer with long term use- I used Flash on my car's wheels some years ago, and they went very dull. Look at the label- if it says "not safe for painted surfaces" then don't use it on your wheels.

I now use Autoglym wheel cleaner diluted (less aggressive and last longer!)- gets off the grime fine with no damage to wheels so far. Wonder Wheels will bring em up like new but I wouldn't use it frequently...

You might find that the saving on the wheel cleaner is outweighed by a refurb!

Come on Mark, how much did your car cost????

It's madness to try and save a couple of quid and ruin your wheels!

In fairness, there are plenty of proprietary wheel cleaners which would damage lacquer if used incorrectly.

I think of most things in life in terms of tanks or litres of fuel. So most things seem good value!

There are also wheel cleaners that damage laquer even when used correctly!

If you clean the wheels on a regular basis with the left over soapy water you use for cleaning the bodywork then you should not need to use any products.

Even if one does not have enough time for an all over clean - it does not take long to give the wheels a good going over. I remember how fed up I used to get with myself every spring from not putting more time into the wheels over winter when I was younger.

Maybe after a track day the wheels may need a little more attention..

I also Zymol my wheels which keeps the muck off. Obviously that is tricky with some wheel designs.

There's a great alloy wheel care tip which I found in the 993 owners manual which I've never heard before or since. The manual recommends putting a thin layer of vaseline over the alloys once you've cleaned them to protect them.

The upside is that the brake dust and grime is held in the vaseline film; so next time you use soapy water the wheels clean up perfectly and very quickly; plus the vaseline helps repel salt and chemicals so stops the alloys corroding. Only downside is they do pick up dirt a little faster.

Worked really well on my car; and it's an easy job the 5 spoke turbo alloys; might be a bit tougher on multi-spoke wheels though.

Similar to Abduls tip.

I use silicone spray on the tyres and spray it onto the alloys as well. This does attract the grime a little more but makes cleaning very easy.

I find wonder wheels the best alloy cleaner

I'm told that a spray of wd 40 over your alloys afterwards helps

apparently the next time you clean the wheels the dirt comes off easier, the dirt stays on top of the wd 40, but i must confess i've never tried it
