What's the general opinion on alignment check/adjustment - have it done at the OPC for accurate settings or use the audi dealership 'cos its closer (and considerably cheaper) for the same work?

OPC have quoted 3hrs labour (usually about £65 an hour)

If it's a 993 then make sure you go to someone who knows what they're doing, as the car's quite sensitive to alignment changes. Ask if they can check the kinematic toe in, and if they say "you what?" then walk away as fast as you can. Even some well known independents send the car out to dealers for the alignment. I do know JZ is ne of the few who can do it properly, with computer print out before and after adjustments.

Cheers Mick, it is a 993 and a C4 at that so probably just stick it into the OPC just to make sure.

Car has been tramlining and bump steering since it was last in there for engine out oil leak repairs but they assured me that they hadn't touched the suspension etc settings.

Got mine done when having new tyres fitted on the C2S. Can't remember exactly what it cost as I have passed all the paperwork on with the car, but I think it was less than £100 - which part of the UK are you in Dunc?

I'm in Central Scotland so i'd have to travel a long way to get to a specialist, hence why I end up at the OPC to be relieved of cash.

Booked it into the Glasgow dealer tomorrow, got fed up with the car feeling so edgy.

Toby, just re-read your post realised that your quote is about £130 an hour?!!!!

I get labour at the OPC for £60 - £75 (depending on work and haggling). Think that all OPCs should be offering cheaper rates for more elderly vehicles

OPC East London did mine twice under warranty - still felt wrong so took it to Autofarm who found it way out of spec but they took a long time to correct it and hence a big, big bill - fortunately settled direct by OPC East London.

Besides having the right equipment, it's also down to how good the person is doing the actual adjustment I'm afraid.

Your problem is that you are in Scotland. You should seriously consider moving down south where you will have a good choice of specialists who can do this work far better than the OPC's. I wouldn't ask my OPC do mine as it is a major factor in the way the car handles.

I've used Camtune and Parr previously at a cost of around £140-£160

I had mine done in an OPC in Northampton a while ago, car still felt "wrong", eventually went to JZ, they found the alignment way out, toe OUT instead of toeing in!!! Just to show how some OPC have no idea about "older" Porsches. Never went there again and never will.

Dunc , sod the OPC's, how are you fairing with this weather?

phoned around today prices were (all ex VAT)

JZ Machtech - £220

Parr - £177

Paragon - £204

Tognola - £140

so compared to the OPC at £330 plus vat they all seem cheaper - henry seems to rate tognola for alignment - any others been used here?

Well, took the car for a good run yesterday (Hendo - weather was great for a change), it felt at least as good as it did before the OPC messed it up the last time.

OPC charged £200 which I think is ok considering my location - it would've cost me a lot more to travel to a specialist.

Can now fling the car about in an amateur fashion without the fear of death I had until recently! Got a full print out of the alignment results and targets also.
