Hi,

I have a 2002 911 996, 3.6 l I have looked at changing the stock air filter and wondered if it is worth changing the stock air filter to a k and n flat panel and also changing the standard air intake to a silicone hose kit with stopper for the airbox.

Is that worth doing? more power and noise?

Looks like a not very expensive mod...

More noise but high risk of MAF being damaged by oil contamination. If power gains was so simple to achieve, Porsche would have fitted it.

Oil damage? is that because of the makeup of the k and n filter or is it because of the different type of tube fitted?

Thanks

It's the oil. People tend to over oil them.

Don't over oil them and they will be fine.

I have run cars on K&N filters for decades now, and on Porsches for over three years without issue.

And over oiling means what turns up out of the box, so aleatory wrap the panel filter in kitchen roll or newspaper and wick in a warm place overnight to remove excess (a couple of heavy books on top helps too).

If you do contaminate the MAF (which normal use and road film does over time any way even with a paper filter), just give it a 30 second IPA wash:
