The start of the story:

Turbo seized (one needed rebuild)
Actuators seized (both)
Coolant leak from engine (now having pipes welded in)
Power steering fluid leaking
Clutch fluid leaking (now fully replacing clutch)
Exhaust heat shield hanging off (new exhaust going in just for fun)
Minor oil leak from engine (engine out so now being sorted)
One cat hair on rear seat

The next chapter:

Compression test failure in one cylinder. Just wondering what else can go wrong! At least the engine is out.

:bandit:

Sorry to hear of your woes, just remember every part replaced is one less to break for a while! What led you to the compression test? Any symptoms?

Ah it's at Fearnsport, they're a very thorough tuner (Matt doing the work) so before doing any work on it he ran it through the test. If I'd just exhaust and remapped at a lazy tuners I could have had a nasty problem!

Oh and what was odd was that despite all of this stuff the car felt perfectly normal, perhaps a little lag and a heavyish clutch.

Tough break - but good news that various problems have been identified and are being rectified.

On a side note: I'd wager that not one of the issues you listed would've been picked up on a PPI ... makes you wonder if they're worth the exorbitant fee they charge ... unless of course you enjoy paying hundreds of pounds for a report stating that there's some stone chips on the front bumper and the driver's side seat leather is a little worn ... (the phrases "money for old rope" and "Emperors new clothes" spring to mind ... :hand: )

Bit anti! My Tognola PPI cost 150 +vat and made it easy to negotiate work worth 1000+. A least 1/2 of that i would never have known about. The other 1/2 met no resistance because the PPI had listed it. It also provided me with a future TLC list so i can budget accordingly.

While. PPI will not help all ppl in all cases it served me just fine.

Good for you dude, really glad it worked out for you.

As for being "anti" - so what?

I've never had a PPI but just took along a Colini stick to assess the car :thumb:

Bloody hell, you've had a rough introduction to ownership, hopefully Matt will soon have it all sorted and be able to enjoy it properly.

a what?!

x2

If it had gone to where mine was inspected, all those items would have been picked up.
No idea how long you've had the car, if private or trade or if it ws PPI'd with anyhting like the thoroughness I took mine, but if all those things have gone wrong in a short space of time, I'd say some could have been present when you bought it (if not all). I hope you got the car at an approapriate price if it needs this much doing to it!

When I was looking there were a lot of knackered dogs and clapped out shire horses of 996 Turbo's all hiding BIG bills. It is a gamble - but you seem to have had a spate of bad luck in your ownership.

I hope after this initial filling up of the money pit, another pit doesn't crop up elsewhere.

Matt was working his magic on your engine when I went down to pick my car up today. It sounded like you might have a bit of good news for a change. I'll be back down there as soon as I've got 500 miles on the car.

All leaks could have been seen, sized actuator would have been noticed which would have led to the turbo, I'd say pretty much all the items listed would have been seen on a ppi, maybe not the cat hair though.

don't feel too bad there. Yes additional due diligence is a good thing and hindsight can be a real bitch. Or another thought is that a lot of that stuff is common Turbo issues from my reading that I think expenses most owners will experience at some point. I think it no more depressing than an owner tallying up receipts and depreciation

And not sure what your ownership plans are, but a) you will have a sorted car to enjoy now and b), this work will only help the resale value and prospects.

My last car was a GTA Trans Am (don't ban me just yet!) that I piled some cash into only for the engine to go bang and now its sitting in my driveway awaiting for its encore with screwing my by the pittance I'll get for it. Still, a handsome driveway ornament and some hollywood moments during my ownership.

good luck with it and hope you're back on the road soon and enjoying :thumb:
