Moving on from my 'welcome' thread in which I was scoping out this is my 'is this a good shout' thread!

Link below, having been to view and go out in the car it is tidy inside and out and seems well kept. The recent OPC major service seemed to be very thorough and there are no gaps in the service history. The previous service reports are missing however, so no idea if and when some of the other components were last replaced.

I have touched base with GT-One, and the seller would consent to a PPI. The front splitter needs a new plastic insert and the alloys could do with a refurb. The PPI would give me the confidence about the mechanical condition of the car. Taking in the cost of the above do you think 12K is a fair offer?

I have others yet to visit, but this ticks the boxes in so far that it is a manual C4, slightly later 3.6 engine, no upcoming service / MOT and work recently completed. I prefer the darker interior as well. I can live with silver, that said the seal grey is nice though, along with the blue and the black.

So, thoughts are welcome. I'll most likely be making the phone call tomorrow morning.

As already said, it's a late 996.1 but is a 996.1 and therefore a 3.4.

It looks very nice but in a private deal £12k is still a lot. If you really like the car I'd offer less and end up there at the most.

Use any minor items found on the PPI to back you up.

Good luck :thumb:

I have no porblem with a 996.1 or the 3.4 engine. Thanks guys, think I'll make the call today then and see if it is accepted.

There are plenty of very similar cars, some with lower mileage, for less money, I think the asking price is a little steep if the wheels etc aren't going to be refurbished prior to sale, and seems as if the recent money spent on major OPC service with disks & pads etc is attempting to be recouped in the asking price.
I'd be suspicious as to why a 13year old 3.4 996 has gone up for sale just after having a major service.
Perhaps a costly future issue has been identified?

As a newbie and a non-Porsche expert I can only speak from personal experience - albeit very recent at looking at 996's and buying one... If you're getting a PPI then that should save a lot of potential pitfalls - but compared to the multitudes of 996's I looked at it is really top top money - when there are 996's with engine rebuilds, IMS etc done and for the price you could get a 996.2 with the 3.6l engine...

Any reason why that car in particular?

No idea where you are based or where you'd travel to - but there are a few cars I would have gone for if it wasn't for deciding I really liked the styling of the 996 I bought.

Other than Manual and C4 are there any other things that are must have or can't have?

It probably needed Brakes etc done to pass the last MOT and the next
service due would have been a major @ 72K anyway.

Looks a decent car but agree that some negotiation on price needed.

Good luck

Reason for sale seems genuine, car used less (2 others used for daily work) and wife is pressuring the sale. May also explain the high asking price (if it doesn't go quickly then convince the wife to keep it). Seller also happy for GT-One to do a detailed PPI prior to sale, so doubt anything is being hidden. Also I work with people who know the seller, in our organisation if someone sold a lemon to a co-worker it would not go down well. I do agree though, perhaps some of the recent service cost is attempting to be re-couped in the asking price.

Will,

I can't quite put my finger on it, I've been to visit a few and like this one the most so far - it just feels right. The interior is in much better condition than anything else I've seen and the history is in good order. I trust the seller which is important when buying private (but won't stop me getting a PPI for peace of mind).

Other than manual C4; the only thing I am against is a garish or untidy interior. I saw a lovely double DIN dash but the rest of the centre console looked like Edward Scissor hands had owned it previously which put me off. It was also the grey interior and I would prefer a black or blue interior.

Get a nice 996.2 for that money.

All cars of this age need work.

Perhaps, I haven't come across a nice manual 996.2 C4 for that price so far though, C2 there were a few.

He has come down on price, I plan to make a couple of enquiries elsewhere tomorrow though if they're still available.

True, I expect work is needed and will forever be an ongoing process. I'm just wary of major expense within the immediate future having just paid out for it.
