A Good Afternoon in the Garage

Following advice I've read from Hartech; I bought a low temperature thermostat along with replacement coolant.
I also decided to do an oil change with Millers 10w50 Nano.
Nothing better than spending a Saturday afternoon in the garage. :)

Old thermo with new

Oil temperature is markedly down from mid 90s to mid 80s on the gauge.

Millers Nano is almost as black new as the used oil I dumped :?

I don't know if it's my imagination but the engine sounds quieter on tick over.

An afternoon well spent I think. :D

Colder or thicker oil will be quieter.

And don't forget, even if the oil was identical (brand and grade etc), new oil will be thicker as it won't be diluted by fuel, combustion products, combustion and water-vapour acids and won't have had its long chains smashed to smithereens yet.

Have just taken delivery of the same thermostat myself.
Wilst i know one end of a spanner from the other I am in the distinctly amateur league.
Is the thermostat a job for a novice?
Potential pitfalls?

btw - my engine temp seems to hold at 80c pretty consistently - will I see much reduction?

Thanks in advance

Hi Rob,
I assume the engine temp you relate to is the engine coolant temperature. If so, you're unlikely to see any reduction.
Where you will, hopefully, see a reduction in temperature is in the oil temperature. I've seen a significant reduction in gauge reading.

I'm a novice on this vehicle, and although not easy, following advice available on this forum, I found little difficulty swapping out the thermostat.
The most difficult mounting screw/bolt is the upper most of the four. You'll need a E10 Female Torx Socket for the screws and a universal joint socket adapter to loosen/tighten that upper most screw fixing.

Refilling and bleeding the cooling system just takes a bit of patience as topping up is required while airlocks/pockets are purged.

Get your spanners out. :D

Thanks.

Are you going to fill with 10w50 Nano? I did after reading that Hartech fill with this oil following rebuild of damaged/worn 997 engines.

My only concern is the colour of the stuff. It looks like used oil.
